I wasn’t quite sure where to post this but…here it goes. My 10 year old netherland dwarf rabbit passed away very suddenly today.

I put his usual afternoon lettuce in his cage and went to run an errand. I came back and he was stiff in the corner of his cage. I don’t know what happened and I was hoping someone on here could help me on the why?? I took him to the vet a month ago and he checked out fine, maybe some weight loss.

Nothing can bring my bunny back, but I’m so confused as to what happened I want some answers…any help or insight would be appreciated. I know dwarves have a life expectancy of about 10, but has anyone else experienced a completely out of the blue death like this?? Thanks to this rabbit forum family..
 
Most likely cause would be cardiac arrest or maybe a stroke, for a sudden death like that, with no preexisting signs of a problem. I'm sorry for the sudden circumstances of your loss. I know it's hard. I had a 10 yr. old dwarf and two of her 9 yr. old babies, pass this year. Though with them, they had a gradual decline due to old age.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Thumper lived a long and happy life with you, i'm sure that he's doing great on the other side.
 
Losses are never easy. Often I request a necropsy to provide peace of mind though all our elders show signs of slowing down, and we simply treasure the remaining time with them. For our Flemish who had cardiac arrest at end of surgery, a necropsy showed his lungs had 1/4th normal function (likely caused by ingesting odor-control paper bedding with baking soda).

No losses are shrugged off in our home. Peace of mind helps us heal. One of our street rescued mutts incurred a sudden stroke (?) the day after our granddaughter was born. Please be grateful your guy had your everlasting love, though the "why" questions will likely linger.

My FB friend had a bun who checked out fine at his DVM exam a month earlier. He went downhill quickly a few weeks later. Necropsy showed liver torsion.

Thank you for the advice. I opted not to do a necropsy so I hope that decision was the right one. His vet of 10 years will be back in the office on Monday so I’m hopeful she can give me some insight…I’m thinking some kind of heart attack or stroke just because it was so sudden.
 
To this day I am still sad over the losses of many of our beloved furry family. They left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. I take solace in knowing they had a much-loved life in our care, yet the emotional grief (heartache) is always there.

@WildThumper2010 == I hope you can talk to your vet and she may provide insight and comforting words. It is not easy when we care so deeply.

The level of grief is equal to the amount of love invested.
