As some of you know, I don't have any television channels at our apartment. Since I don't stay up to date with TV, I go online to read the news, check deaths, etc. Today, while checking the "recent deaths" on Wikipedia, I came across this story. It is about Brazilian model Mariana Bridi da Costa. She was a 20 year old model who died on the 24[sup]th[/sup]. Has anyone heard about this? I will post the link, but if you are a little squeamish for medical nightmares, don't read anything beyond the picture.

Wikipedia's article - This is more of a Biography than anything.

Here is an article that vaguely explains what happened:

If you aren't keen on reading, here is the short story. She was a Brazilian model and former finalist on the Brazilian stage of the "Miss World" pageant. She became ill in December and was falsely diagnosed with kidney stones. Within a month, her hands and feet were amputated in an attempt to save her life. She died of a heart attack that was brought on by necrotic septicemia (blood poisoning that causes tissue death).

Poor girl, what a way to go. RIP Mariana.

I can't even imagine having to go through the loss of a finger! I have no idea how you could come to terms with losing a whole limb... or all of them! I just can't wrap my mind around it. :(

Thats what Im sitting here thinking. That poor lady went through so very much, and I hate to say it - but in a lifestyle where "beauty" is so much... She had to be in such physical and mental pain. I just couldnt imagine.

I just read about her the other day, but I didn't realize that she had passed away now.:(

I can't imagine having to go through all that. And for something treatable too. The article I read said it started with a UTI that was thought to actually be kidney stones, and from there the infection went into her blood.

It's just a freak accident. I know the doctors misdiagnosed her, but if you think about it, how often does this kind of thing happen? I'm still getting the jitters just thinking about having my hands/feet amputated. *shivers* I mean, you can get any infection and it could kill you if it gets into your blood. You cut your finger on something, a little bacteria gets in. It goes unnoticed, some people try to cure it themselves, it gets worse. It sounds like she was going to get help at the doctors, but it was just an odd case. :(

I just watched the documentary Murderball, about the quadraplegic rugby players, and this thread made me think about one of the guys on there. Got some sort of blood infection at age 9, had to have all legs and arms amputated. He did survive, he's 33 or something now, and it was amazing the things he could do. (The amputations were around the knees/elbows.)

I think what gets me most about things like this......We think of ourselves as so advanced. I mean, there are so many amazing things medical science can do, but a little blood infection could still be so devastating.

I saw that. It was a great documentary. It is funny how something so small and simple can ruin us. I guess we really are fragile.
