I heard a while ago that bunnies can carry Salmonella is this true? I thought it was just on reptiles not bunnies. Or are there any other things bunnies can have that can harm/make us sick? Thanks

I'm sure it's possible that something can be contracted from any animal (or human), but I've never heard of any cases, and I do an awful lot of research on rabbits.

(I know my Mom came down with some weird infection from a dog licking her, but that too was really rare -- and she has an immune deficiency). With anything, just basic hygene -- washing your hands -- keeps it all at bay.

But back on topic, I think Pam Nock answered a question about possible ailments contracted by rabbits not too long ago, I'll see if I can find the post. Stay tuned!

Here's one from a thread I forgot to bookmark (duh)... The question was whether colds were catchy I think... (And I'm assuming the reference to people and 'humans' really meant people and 'rabbits') ;)

There are many illnesses than can be passed between people and humans, but these instances are rather rare, unless the person has a compromised immune system. The most common concernare bite or scratch wounds, which can lead to infection. In a few rare cases, humans have contracted pasteurella orally (by kissing their precious pets on the mouth). Mites and fungus can also be transmitted to humans via rabbits.
