So far, this is my family:
- Tidbit, hooded rat, female
- Minx, albino rat, female
- Gus, Holland Lop rabbit, male
- Molly, Flemish Giant rabbit, female
- Leela, Chow Chow dog, female
I'll admit that Tidbit was an impulse buy! I only had young bunnies at the time and they hadn't bonded to me yet, and I needed cuddles ... The boyfriend didn't want a dog, but let me get a rat, which are actually very affectionate for those who don't know. The night I brought her home, I did a ton of research and realized that rats require a lot of companionship. The next day, I ran out and bought her a friend - Minx. That way they would have each other (and a cage stuffed with toys) during the days I was too busy to devote much time to them.
I found Molly and her sisters on Kijiji being sold for meat. I wasn't even looking for a rabbit at the time. I had actually just lost my first bunny to an extreme case of GI stasis and did not want another for a long while... But I'm such a bleeding heart, and once I saw the ad I had to respond. Two weeks later, they wereold enough to be sold as a "fryers", and I drove four hours to pickthem up and bringthem home. I rehomed one of them, and planned on keeping two until Molly's sister had a terrible accident... Long story short, I had to have her euthanized, and Molly was left alone.
I always knew I wanted two bunnies, ever since my first bonded pair, so I decided to get Molly a teeny little boyfriend and named him Gus. He really is more Molly's rabbit than mine :biggrin2:.
Leela is four years old and was adopted from a family that didn't want her any more. I am her fourth (and last) home. She is the sweetest dog, but as far as Chow standards go, she's not all that pretty . But I love her!
Which brings me to my possible new addition. I have rescued and adopted many animals (which makes working in a pet store really hard because every time something is sick I just want to bring it home). And I've decided I want a puppy. I want the full experience of training, housebreaking, and watching a puppy grow. Leela is my first dog and she was four when I got her, so I've never had this experience.
I originally wanted another Chow Chow... They're lazy and independant, so they don't require constant attention, but they're so loyal as well. Leela will follow you to the bathroom and throw herself on the floor in front of the door and wait for you to come out . I definitely want a dog with a low energy level, not a huge barker (we live in a townhouse), but maybe a little more playful and needy than Leela (Leela doesn't even play with toys). After a lot of research, I've decided on a Newfoundlander.
I'm so excited! Now I just need to convince the boyfriend :rollseyes......
