I just saw this on the Wikipedia obituaries (Yes, I'm a little dark)... I guess the police shot and killed him yesterday (June 06, 2009). Here is the link on Wikipedia for the article on him.

Here is just an excerpt from the article on Wikipedia:

Patrick Tracy Burris, known as the Cherokee County Serial Killer (August 8, 1967 - July 6, 2009) was a spree killer responsible for at least five known murders in South Carolina in 2009. Over a span of six days, he shot five people dead. His final known victim died of her injuries in the hospital on July 4, 2009. On July 6, 2009, Associated Press reported that police had shot and killed a man during a shootout in Dallas, North Carolina whose gun matched ballistics reports of the bullets used to kill the five victims.
It's great that they caught him, it's just sad for the families because their loved one's killer got "an easy way out". I guess they can all sleep easy knowing that he is not at large anymore.

Any thoughts?

well....kinda. he woulda been killed anyways but ou jail system works so slowly we would have spent thosands to keep him alive on death row....i kinda belevive the old texas way...get a rope and a tree when it comes to murder and rape.

Yeah, it's a hard situation with death sentences. Sometimes the system is right but a lot of the time it's letting known killers eat up money we pay into taxes (with not only care and stuff but with attorneys and court hearings as well)...

i agree with it being a waste of our money.
atleat he cant harm anyone physically

This is very close to my area. People in Gaffney were arming themselves like crazy, so if the police didn't kill him, a citizen would have. They were interviewing a shop owner in Gaffney and he told them that he was staying open all through the 4th weekend so if anyone wanted a firearm he would be there to make sure they got one. He said that his guns were flying out of there. What I would like to know more about is the brother and sister pair that were in the house with him when he was gunned down. The house was abandonded, the bro/sis pair's father lived there until he passed away. The killer's Explorer was hidden under the carport....were they harboring him? Another thing, I'm not sure if the National news picked up on this or not, but before the police shot him he actually shot a cop in the foot, luckily he wasn't hurt too badly!

Easy way out?
Not really. If they'd just stuck him in jail it could have been years before actually convicted, tried, etc... and then finally coming to the death penalty.
I think them killing him now was better than that because now it won't take forever for it to finally happen. ;)

What I meant by "easy way out" was that he didn't have to take responsibility for the killings. He didn't have to draw it out and "suffer", etc. I don't know, I believe in bringing someone to justice (but maybe add an express lane to the "back room").

Yeah, this bothered me because it was so close to us.
From all accounts, obviously, this guy wasn't right in the head.
The whole thing was a sorry mess - I feel sorry that so many lives were destroyed by him - but I am glad taxpayer money wasn't thrown at keeping him alive.

I agree that he go the "easy way out". He should have to suffer more for what he did to those people, he should have to be stuck in a jail cell for several life sentences. But he doesn't.

Law enforcement also won't know if he really is the guy they want. There could be someone else in the same town with that same gun. Obviously many people were buying guns to arm themselves. It could have been one of them.

ETA:I wrote this before I read the story so I am sure the guy they got was him butyou really never can tell.
