Well little miss Faith has lost her unlimited free time. I'm thinking she has hit full puberty and that's probably why her previous owners didn't want her anymore. She is peeing/pooping EVERYWHERE!!! I have changed her from the pet store cage to a large dog crate that used to belong to my Rottweiler (R.I.P.). She was getting 24/7 run time in her sectioned off area but I think it's teaching her bad box habits.

So I'm needing to restrict her to the crate unless I'm home and able to supervise her. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this bc it's not her fault, it's her ovaries. So she'll get her sunrise/sunset run time every day.

She is totally in love with my husband! She circles his feet, honking, then crawls all over him when he gets down on the floor. It's cute, but she's still getting spayed on the 30th. I'm hoping that since she's still young this will cure her potty accidents.

Oh boy :X:vacuum:

Yup, know where you are coming from. Harley hits and misses with the potty bit. Some days are really good, others not so good. I put him in his litter box whenever I think of it, this definitely helps. Has the most accidents at night, when everyone is asleep and light down low. A little frustrating isn't it to go from a fully trained rabbit to a trainee.lol

Oh yes, definitely frustrating. Then they look up at you with those "who me?" innocent eyes and I just have to smirk! :innocent

so maybe my rabbits are in that puberty stage too?! I was thinking they were just gonna be hit or miss... although they def know where their litter box is, and where their "spot" is in the cage. So... they'll grow out of it?

Oh yes, puberty is fun. Learn that from my boys. Had to restrict them as well for exactly what you posted. But definitely did grow out of it.

9 months old now, getting close to leaving puberty, and they got the point of where to go.

Just hang in there. Sound like they are almost there.

Our rabbit, Grendel, is a mystery still -- we found her in October on the side of a road, cowering under a tree, apparently dumped. We've never had a rabbit and do love her and find her to be a lot of fun. I have a lot of questions but i can start by relating to her being a pee/poop monster-- she's been a huge pain of late.

October and November were good. She warmed up to us and made friends with the cats (we have 4 indoor cats), and was very well litter-box trained. Since she wouldn't let us pet her even, we didn't schedule a vet appt because we weren't sure how we would get her there.

In December, she started being messy. She dropped poop and little pee spots all over in the house, though not in her home area (the garage). this lasted for about a week. We also got her to the vet. the vet couldn't say how old she is, other than young.

She was doing well with the litterboxes in the house again (although she persisted in making poop trails), but last weekend the peeing started again, and she began mounting her best cat friend, Nyxi, and honking. she kind of "squirts" pee when in the vicinity of Nyxi.

So, my questions --

(1) any idea how old this kid is? she's solid smokey gray and about 5.5 lbs. i wonder because she seems like she just hit puberty in December, but she seems too big. she also is well-behaved except for the litterbox -- not aggressive at all, though she does, of course let us know when she wants something or we're "in her way" by nudging us.

(2) after she is spayed, is the peeing and mounting going to stop? the pooping isn't that big of a deal, but the peeing is pretty disgusting, and i'm also afraid she's going to damage her relationship with Nyxi or get hurt when Nyxi has had enough. any advice?

(3) she's scheduled to be spayed next month. the cost estimate is $500-600. we took her to a vet that was recommended and seems very rabbit friendly, and we want her to be well-cared for, but i wonder if this is the market price for the SF Bay Area? the main reason we've been delaying in getting her spayed is so that we would have the cash to spend $500-600 on her.

(4) there are low cost options that cost $100 or less. i am nervous about the expertise and quality of these, however. any thoughts? does anyone have experience with low-cost clinics?

thank you so much for any help or advice you can offer!!

Wow that's a pricey spay! I don't know if it's the norm in your area, but my Faith will be a bit less than $200. I found my bunnies vet on the HRS website.
I really hope spaying will cure the pee accidents! Crossing our fingers for both of us!
I'm glad you're just getting the nudging, hopefully she will be spayed before the nudging turns to nipping :grumpy:
Good luck, hopefully someone with more experience will chime in, there are lots of knowledgeable people on here :biggrin2:

Congratulations, keep doing what you doing. I'm not the most knowledgable regarding rabbits, (I have a whole 9 months under my belt) but it seems your girl is about as normal as it gets. Rabbits use pee to mark. The stream you are seeing is gross but it's their way. And she must like your cat if she is marking her. It's not a bad thing in the rabbit world. It's basically your rabbit, my marking, cat or carpet, is saying, "This is mine." They claim things and people.

The spaying will definitely help. My boys once they were neutered stopped marking and I have had no problem with them peeing in the litter box. The poop, well welcome to the world of bunnies. Bunnies also use their poop to mark. My Kreacher is a 24/7 marker. I can clean his crate and two seconds after I put him back in, he will have poop trails all over. It's just some bunnies way. I'd rather clean up poop than pee. So I'm a happy camper right now.

Regarding your bunny and her cat friend, just observe. Once the spaying is done and a few months have passed the mounting will stop. But you are wise to keep them apart until spaying so that no fighting or feeling hurt by the cat because the bunny loves her/him.

You are doing just fine. You got the handle on what being a bunny owner is.

Wishing you continued success. Welcome to the Bunny World. They won't disappoint. They are amazing little creatures.

K :)
