:( Paddington my grand daughters 4 month old mini lop has an abcess on his cheek. She phoned me today to ask for my help, she thought her bunny had food lodged in his cheek. I went up there and could feel a large scab and sweeling on his check. Upon closer observation I could see the scab. When cutting some of the fur off so that I could clean it, the sore started to ooze pus. Hot cloths later and lots of pus the top let loose and I could see heavy think pus underneath. 4 o'clock on a Saturday but the vet was still there. They lanced the abcess and then scooped large quantities of heavy pus for it. Then the flushed it with peroide. He is on chorpalm - 2 times a day - I understand this is illegal in many countries except Canada, and peroxide flush 2 times a day. Quarantened from all of the other rabbits until it heals. It was deep right to the bone, that is understandable on a 1.4 pound baby rabbit, don't know if it is a molar as he couldn't get his mouth open enough to check. Prayer for the next week would be most appreciated as if it doesn't heal they don't offer much hope. All of this was done without freezing or anything, their feeling was he was just too little, amazing that he didn't scream or fuss, maybe he is too sick or in too much pain at the moment to really care:?. I just know that I was pretty horrified at the whole thing, but was beyond what I could do on my own. But that is not the worse part. A couple left the building as we were arriving, looking upset. When I went to the washroom the examining room door had been left open by them when they left and their little scotty type dog was lying on the examining table, dead. They had just had him put down, and then left. No one bundled him in a blanket, covered him NOTHING. THEY just left.I am guessing that they felt bad, but OMG couldn't someone cover him up like he mattered. I have never dealt with abcesses before, pray for the little guy.

So just got back from doing and antibiotic, preoxide treatment. DD helped me by actually doing the preoxide flush. She is 18 so nice to see her being responsible. When I picked the preoxide up the gal at the till told me they were horse breeder and used hot tea bag to help draw facial abcesses on horses. We did a hot tea bag on his face when we were through. Thought if nothing else the heat would be soothing. Am trying to find animal probiotic but the town is so small I get a blank look. Will go to the health food store later and see if nothing else they have them for kids. So far he is eating, pooing and not looking overly stressed.

Can you get chlorhexidine to use as a flush instead of the peroxide? That is what my vet gave me to flush Sparky's abscess pocket. I don't know if it is available in Canada, but you don't need a prescription for it in the US.I've read that peroxide is destructive on the tissue. I would also recommend getting x-rays to see if there is tooth root involvement. If there is then the tooth needs to come out if there is any hope of recovery. If the tooth doesn't come out, then the abscess wIill just come back.

Will go to the drug store and ask for it. Can they do surgery on a rabbit that small?? 1.4 kg or about 2.8 pounds??

I don't see any reason that a vet that is experienced with exotics couldn'tperform the surgery. A primary concern is properly administering the anesthesia. I am concerned that you say that it was "to the bone." You really need x-rays to determine the extent of the damage and whether it is tooth related. Even if it is.....please don't give up hope. My Sparky had what my vet said was the worst abscess she had ever seen. It had eaten into the bone. I was fortunate that my vet has had advanced training in exotic dentistry. Sparky had all the teeth on the left side of her mouth pulled, had 3 surgeries and almost 4 months of treatment. This was earlier this year and, at seven years old, she is very much alive, healthy and thriving today!

If you can't get the chlorhexidine at the drug store, ask your vet or you can get it my mail order.

Drug store only had it in a soap, will ask the vet tomorrow. Druggist was concerned that it didn't have the same foaming action that peroxide does as the abcess is thick like cottage cheese. So far haven't found any probiotics but the farm store is open tomorrow and will follow the lead of horse probiotics. Am using my husbands today as they are a powder and just sprinkled them on the wet dandelions. They at least contain 13 different probiotic bacteria. Warm tea bag on face acting well before cleaning. Seemed to loosen some of the pus and make it more priable to squeeze out. Then we were able to get the syringe in a little deeper and give it a good clean. Have given it 2 good cleans today and will do another before bed. Amount of pus the 2nd time was less than yesterday at vet but still a good amount coming out. Will be glad when the antibiotics take effect. Will ask vet tomorrow about at least X-raying so that we can rule out or confim tooth involvement. He is only 4 months old so tooth involvement seems so strange, am hoping more for spider or bug bit. So far the abcess appears to be the size of a marble, at the largest point of treating it. Yuck disqusting stuff.

His size is fine for surgery. Dwarf rabbits get spayed all the time, and some of them are 2 lbs or less when they are old enough to be spayed. If the vet is experienced with rabbits, he should be ok.

Your husband's probiotics should be ok until you get to the farm store.

found 2 rabbit recommended vets from the Canadian Rabbit society online and have sent them emails, not only to confirm treatment so far but find out their recommendations on x-rays and surgery if required. The vet I seen on Saturday has treated our bigger rabbit but not his regular one, I just felt that more care could have been done with the lancing procedure, felt like it was a "rabbit" and he was a little rough.
