Ugh is all I can say. Right now, Fairbanks is in the center of 3 forest fires. The closest is 20 miles away, the farthest is 200. It's completely smoky outside and there are health warnings about staying indoors... Even though we have all the windows closed, it's still all hazy inside from the smoke and our throats and eyes are sore. There's ash on everything outside and the sky was the most bizarre, sickly shade of yellow. Here's an article about the fires if anyone's interested:

One about resources going down:

Here's a link to a web site showing the air quality, yesterday it was at Hazardous (which is the worst it can be).

It's been such a smoky summer with so many forest fires! Over 2 million acres of forest have burned so far. I know a lot of people will naturally be sad over all the forest that's burning, but forest fires are just a fact of life up here. The trees that are burning are mostly black spruce trees, which are practically designed to burn- their resin is extrememly flammable and their little pine cones open when they're exposed to the flames. Once the black spruce burn down, other trees like aspen, birch and poplar will be sprouting up within weeks, plus lots of shrubs and plants like fireweed (which actually got its name because it's the first thing to pop up after a fire).
I just thought some people may be interested. I'm supposed to be writing a paper tonight but I'm having a hard time concentrating. I took some pictures but Photobucket is down. Also, if we have to evacuate, we already discussed how the bunnies will be loaded in the car!
