I rescued 2 rabbits about 1 month ago after someone dumped them off in our town.
The smallest of the rabbits gave birth 4 days after I was able to capture them.
She had 6 kits but only 5 survived.
They are now 3 weeks old and doing great!
They had a pretty rough go at the beginning because mama wasn't sure what was going on...she seems to be fairly young herself.
My question is...1 of the kits has a very short curly coat while all the others are very thick and fluffy.
I believe this litter was from 2 different males.
Here are pics of mama and the male that I believe is the one responsible for the 1 brown kit of the litter. There is still a large white rabbit roaming the town that I havent been able to capture yet, but I believe he is the one responsible for the 4 white kits.
Both male and female rabbits look to be lionhead.
The one kit maybe has the Astrex gene?🤷‍♀️

Kits in a litter can be quite diverse, depending on which set of genes they inherit. With random mixes you never know what you gonna get, it's a bucket of surprises. Imo they are most, most likely from the same male.

It could be astrex, but some kits can have a different fur texture that changes to a normal fur type as it gets older or when the baby coat is shed. As this kit gets older and after it's first coat shedding, if it retains the curly coat then it's astrex.

I have done some research on the astrex gene and yes it does state that once the first coat is shed chances are it will no longer be curly..unless of course it does in fact come back curly which will reveal the astrex gene is definitely present.

Good job caring for the surprise babies! That is really interesting about the kit with the short, curly fur. I agree that it does kinda look like an astrex.
