Since most rabbits don't require plaincanned pumpkin on a long-term basis, it would seem very easy to waste most ofa can--even a small one.

I'm wondering how people manage to keep it fresh/edible. If you keep it in the freezer, in what type of container do you store it? And how do you still avoid it from developing freezer burn--or from evaporating the way that ice tends to do over time?

Thank you,

Jenk

You can scoop the pumpkin into ice cube trays and freeze them. Once frozen, pop out the cubes into a freezer bag and store them in the freezer. When you need them, defrostone cube at a time when you go to feed the bunnies. In the summer, you can give it to them as a cool treat.

I put mine into smaller containers and freeze it. I find that the ED Smith brand does NOT freeze well so if you can try to avoid it. Once defrosted it will last about a week in the fridge.

That's what I was going to suggest, that's JimD's idea I believe. It's awesome,I used to just freeze it in a clump;).

This may seem like a dumb question, but bear with me: do you dispose of the frozen pumpkin cubes after a certain time period? (I'd think that after a year, it might be time to freeze a new batch; I could be wrong.)

It can be kept up to a year frozen

but I honestly don't keep it more then six months just because I am weird like that!

I'd probably replace it with a new batch every six months, too. :p At least plain canned pumpkin doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

:biggrin2:

I cook the pumpkin in the oven for 35-45 minutes, until it falls off the skin. I drain off all the excess liquid and put the cooked pumpkin through a blender (food processor). Then I bag it in zip-close sandwich or snack sized bags (easy to squeeze out all the excess air). Then I put a bunch of small bags into a gallon sized freezer bag and freeze the lot.(Easy to mark with date and info). It does keep well for a year. (But between the rabbits and fresh pumpkin pie, it doesn't last that long in this house!)
