I am shopping for a bunny. We had a mini lop that passed away in Jan 10. I would love to get a young bunny, but spraying has been brought to my attention. We are likely to get a buck, and I was wondering if anyone has experienced issues with spraying or not. I am wondering if this is something I should worry about, or is it a non-issue. It is rather expensive to neuter and would prefer not to, to save the money. Thank you for your help!

Neutering mitigates all kind of issues besides spraying. Some males spray a lot when they are mature and others don't hardly spray at all. All of our males got the snip with no adverse effects. Check around with some of the Rescue outfits and they might be able to steer you to a rabbit savvy Vet that won't try to make his monthly payroll off you. Some can be outrageous while others are very accommodating.

Haha....I've gotten in a few un-neutered males lately. They are definately rowdy boys! They both sprayed and one of them has actually dowsed my ceiling! If you don't want to deal with "bad boy" behavior, consider an already fixed male!

unfixed males scare the poop outta me....

i pay 48.00 to neuter a male bunny..that stops the spraying, the circling ur legs, the grunting, the humping.the chasing me outta the room thing..they become sweet little angels after the neuter..ok maybe not angelic but close.:innocent

It is so very much worth it to pay the money for a neuter.

Idon't think thatI could handle an unneutered male as they are so messy compared to a neutered boy.
if you got a female she would also need to be spayed to avoid future cancer issues. so go with a boy and shop around for an experienced vet .

before we got my rabbit fixed, he would not only spray objects but me and my other pets, he also peed and pooped everywhere, chewed a large whole in the wall. the night I knew I couldn't take it anymore is when he climbed into my bed and sprayed me while I was sleeping! Needless to say it was a nightmare.

I wouldn't live with an unneutered male - even without spraying there are a host of other problems including behavioral and the fact that they just plain stink! Plus, I can't imagine how happy a rabbit could be if he was programmed to mate constantly but unable to fulfill that - neutering will make him so much happier and calmer.

If you can't afford to neuter, then get an already fixed rabbit. However, if the cost of neutering is really a deterrent, really consider if you can afford a rabbit long term, since they aren't especially cheap. In the end, the price of the neuter is a small price to pay for the quality of the rabbit's life and yours.
