Hello everyone,

Over the past couple of days, I have noticed something on Devon's face.It is hard to explain, but it feels almost like short hair (muchshorter an whiter than the rest of the body). At first this regionseemed small, but now this area appears bigger. Touching it or movingthe hairs around does not bother him at all. From the side his facialprofile looks odd. Should I be concerned and take him to the vet? I doplan to explain this over the phone to the vet tommorow anyhow. Or am Ijust overreacting and being a nervous nellie (I hope that I am)?

Here is a picture from the front:

From the pics, it really just looks like yourrabbit is molting (shedding). If there is no abcess then Idon't think you have much to worry about. Again, I am justjudging this from the pic and if you feel the rabbit is not molting, then take it to the vet. Some rabbits, when they molt, tendto do it a little at a time and they seemed two-toned. Thereis actually a line that is visible and is sort of a divider between thenew fur and the old fur that hasn't molted out yet. GoodLuck. Hope that is all it is.

Whenever you are not sure what is going on take them to the vet.

oooooooooooo.. Devon!! I hope everythin isokay!! You were so patient in waiting for him to come home that i thinkid be heartbroken if something was really wrong with him! please let usknow what happensas soon as you get back from the vet!!

Well, I have an appointment this afternoon withthe vet, so that I can get a definitive answer. Although now that youguys mention molting, it gets me thinking. I do feel a slight bump, butthen again that could be his skull. And the hair in that area is muchshorter and much whiter than the rest of his body. Lastly, there is avisible line. I hate to speculate, but based on everyone's experienceare those the earmarks of molting? Regardless, I am still taking him tothe vet this afternoon... just to be on the safe side.

Mocha looked like that at that age.Her fur on her face was thicker and darker. I thought she wasa point color or something. It disappeared when she wentthrough a molt, although she did not molt until months later.Hopefully this is all that it is for you!

Mocha then:

Thanks. Those pictures are reassuring. Mocha'sface looks kind of like what I see on Devon. I have a good feelingabout this, I think he is going to be fine.

I'll let everyone know how he's doing when we get back from the vet.

Well there is nothing wrong with going to the vets. You canjust make sure there is nothing wrong and he can pretty much just get acheck up.
Yup, that's my feeling. Better safe then sorry.

Yay! Great news! I just got back from the vetand she said it was nothing to worry about. She noticed that the hairlooked like it had been trimmed off. She said it was likely caused whenhe sticks his head through the NIC cubes in his cage. When he pullsback it snaps some of that hair off. Evidently that is why the hair isshorter and coarser. I'm still glad I took him to the vet though, a vetvisit is a small price to pay for peace of mind.
