I have a question about my bunnys behavior towards people outside the house.

When it comes to me and my wife, Spikey will come right out of the cage to us, or sit and wait for us to fill her bowl before she goes to it (if its empty)

But I have noticed the last 2 times my mom has come over to see us and tried to either pet Spikey or feed her, she lunges at her hand and either nips or nudges her hand out of the cage or out of the way

Does she just not like my mom (LOL) or does she just not recognize her and doesnt know much better?
I ask because we are going down to miami to do some stuff at the Colombian consulate and wont be home for 2 nights, so my mom is going to come over every day to make sure she has food and water while we are away.

Also, is it a good idea to maybe leave a radio playing on low volume for her so she doesnt get too lonely?

I leave the radio on for my buns every day, I think they like it.

Does your mom have other pets that her hands might smell like? Otherwise, I am thinking Spikey is being territorial. Is she spayed?

Ok I will leave the radio on for her while we are gone.

She does have a dog, but every time we have gone over to her house and came back, I really have not noticed her acting different around us.

She is not spayed.

She knows you, but not your mom. The smell of the dog is confusing her and maybe upsetting her a bit. My one grand daughter has a dog and Benjamin doesn't warm up to her either. The teenagers that come through the house that smoke and try and pet him, he really takes offence to. Some rabbits are more "One"person animals - in your case two - than others. They form a bond with their people and no others. Maybe your mom should make sure she washes her hands good and applies some hand lotion ( apple, coconut or some friendly scent ) before trying to touch her. I am sure Mom really wants to pet her, but it may never happen. We always leave the TV or radio on when we go out.

Sometimes it's a territorial issue, sometimes it's another animal smell on you, and sometimes it's just not gonna happen as I don't know you. Bunnies are funny. Bonnie was spayed, but she still ran around me doing courting behavior and making a nest out of newspaper--when Nancy came into the room she would screech and attack her legs.

She might just not be used to your mum and needs time to get used to her. Maybe your mum can use the time you guys will be away to spend time with her and hopefully spikey will warm up to her. She can just sit or lay down outside her enclosure and let her sniff her through the bars. But as has been said, all rabbits are different, some like everyone, some don't like anyone, some only like their "immediate" family. Will take time to figure out what kind of rabbit yours is. =)
