Male spiders play dead for sex: study

Feb 27 01:17 PM US/Eastern

Advice on how to score with the ladies would probably never include the strategy that works best for at least one species of male spider: playing dead.

Not all male nursery web spiders looking for a little arachnid sex adopt this technique, but those that do more than double their chances of hitting the jackpot, according to new study in Behavioral Ecology, reported Wednesday in the British magazine New Scientist.
In experiments designed by Trine Bilde of the University of Aaarhus in Denmark, researchers set up date-and-mate opportunities for Pisaura mirabilis, a species native to Europe.
All the males sought to attract partners by offering a gift of food, held in the mouth.
But the ones that lay flat and motionless -- even if meant getting dragged about by a female that had latched onto the victuals -- wound up in a much better position, as it were, to engage in sexual activity.
The hapless males that tried the direct approach wound up keeping the free meal but not getting what they were really after.
Males that played dead were also allowed to copulate longer than males that did not, ensuring more eggs could fertilized, the researchers reported.
Playing dead is a well-known defence mechanism in nature, but this is apparently the first time such behaviour has been observed as a strategy for obtaining sexual favours.

Uhm...I hope this was supposed to be posted in the mod section as a joke, but somehow ended up here. This is not appropriate for members and hopefully a mod removes this soon.

Considering it's a wire service story (I think it's even on CNN's front page? Or maybe it was Drudge), and it's being taught in elementary school biology, I think we're okay there. ;)

But yeah, definitely posted as a joke.

And definitely off topic. :biggrin2:

I found it interesting and funny, bugs are quite cool to learn about.

Guess y'all wouldn't want to know what my female mantis does to her boyfriends during the act, then? :panic:

hehe, that's an interesting approach... it'd be funny if guys tried it, you walk intothe room and they collapse and play dead :p

But Chelle, I'm curious now, what do the female praying mantises do? :huh

I haven't had a mantis for a little while, but when I had my last female, often times she wouldn't eat them, but but then radomly she began to munch on them while in the middle of, ah, what's an RO safe term...rolling in the hay? The male doesn't seem to mind one bit and keeps hanging on for dear life, till eventually she's eaten half of him and the other half is still clinging on. So for days she goes about with half a male body hanging off her, not seeming to mind, eventually it dries up and falls off.

:panic:

Don't they rip their heads off?

They generally begin to eat theirprey at the neck area, so yes, this does result in the "beheading" of their mate. One of our "ladies" mated, beheaded the male, and stuck his head to the side of the enclosure. :devil

We enjoy having mantids - they are extremely aggressive, and can hiss loudly by rubbing their wings over their backs. Some of ours have even eaten small frogs, but grasshoppers are their favorite.

Unfortunately, they don't have a very long lifespan :cry1:

But we are expecting babies. :stork:

No kidding. (The boys, anyway). :yuck

(And hey, this is great stuff -- even though it's off-topic, supposed to be SPIDER sex, guys, not Mantis sex, sheesh -- sowhy did I have to stash it in here?)

:whatevah

Don't forget to take the article on spider sex to read, Pam!

I think the female mantis has a great idea there...... :p

I like the head-stuck-on-the-side-of-the-enclosure bit. :biggrin2:

(And even with that neon sign on the wall, the next guy is STILL in line lookin' to get 'lucky'). ;)

Yep - Guy #2 met the same fate. . .

Pam

You'd think eventually those "guys" would get the idea that copulating is perhaps not very survival for THEM...lol! Silly buggies!

Interesting that she would stick his head to the side of the enclosure, though...how odd. Guess she figures...if a guy still comes up for lovin' even with this blatant proof...well then maybe he deserves what's comin' to him...hehe!!

And why wasn't this good enough for LYHD?
