Today, the YMBL officially decided to cancel the State Fair..
http://www.kfdm.com/news/cancelled_28030___article.html/fair_south.html
What this means is the 18 months these kids, like Blake, have worked on a Heifer.. or a steer, the rabbits bred.. the weighing and purchase price of pigs and said cattle, lambs, goats and poultry, is all for naught.
It costs over $500 a month to feed one heifer/steer.. I have 3.. the pig runs about $100 a month to feed because he's on powerfill and beet pulp to maintain his weight. Then we have the rabbits..
I didn't have to do this...but many people take out second mortgages to purchase and feed steers.. or they get title loans on their vehicles. They depend on selling these animals. Not to mention the prestige of winning a buckle or a banner..and the pride in just showing in general.
Seniors usually depend on the money for their first years tuition in the fall..
We paid around $1500 a head for each boys steer...the pig was $500...and we just show cattle, rabbits and pigs.. think of everyone else who has more kids and more animals..
Their official story is.. Fema is using the fairgrounds as a staging area. That would be great if Fema was actually doing something for this area.. Bridge City, the Bolivar Penisula, Gilchrist..is wiped off the map.. and they won't even give these people trailers..
They arn't even providing ANYTHINGlike they provided to New Orleans..their operation is so small for this area.. it could be moved elsewhere..and for darn sure.. they arn't using the barns we use.. it's all up in the front of Ford Park.. Peg's been there.. she can tell you the size of the place.. and where the barns are in relation to the front of the park.
The least they could do is let these kids have the livestock show..cancel the fair.. fine, but don't take away the sweat equity these kids have in these projects..
At this point.. unless we can find a different venue..which is unlikely because everything we could use was wiped off the map, and a corporate sponsor.. these kids will be eating their pigs and cattle themselves..
We are getting up a texting/MySpace/IM chain going to comment the KFDM site, and generate intrest from buisnesses in Texas and the media to help these kids out..
Were talkin over 500 kids..
If any of ya'll have the time.. could you go comment it for us?
Thanks for lettin me rant.. my kids are in tears.. as are many other's im sure..
