Hey everyone, I'm a little nervous. My four year old bunny, Jeffrey, is acting a little odd today. To start, we got Benjamin a few months ago in hopes they would bond, and their territorial ways are making it a bit tricky. Today, I walked into their room, which smelled strongly as thought they'd been spraying one another. Jeffrey was in his cage, and there were multiple diarrhea-like patches. They might be cecal droppings that he laid on and squished, but they look like round little pancake piles. I tried to remove his food, and he lunged at my hand and growled, and he is not usually aggressive with me at all. He proceeded to eat food and poop normally in his litter box, but I am a little worried. Is he just stressed and being territorial because of sharing a room with Benjamin? Or does this sound anything like one of the more serious GI diseases I know bunnies can be prone to? Help!

Are either of your buns fixed? it really sounds to me like he is being territorial. I would get both of them altered if you hope to bond them in the future!

If it's been a few months since you got Benjamin, I don't think it's stress. The pancake piles definitely sound like mushed cecals. Itcould just be a bad reaction to something he ate or it could be more serious.I couldn't tell you which. But I'm going to move this to the Infirmary so the more experienced members can offer some help.

This is going to sound gross, but do the pancake patches smell onion-y, like rabbit marking odor, or just like poo? That can help you tell if they are uneaten cecals (smell like onions/marking) or another thing to be worried about. Usually rabbit diarrhea is a huge mess--not just a few smashed bits--and smells very much unlike normal fecal pellets or cecals.
