So, yesterday we were gone for 10 hours at an ERBA rabbit show! It was great fun and there were over 1000 rabbits there! Did I say fun? Did I mention the incredibly TINY building for those 1000 rabbits, owners, and kids!? WOW! We hadsuch a small barn on the fairgrounds (but it's ok, because this part of washington had a flood in December, and the fairgrounds were totally bashed up.)

Anyway, I had Mississippi (my English Lop buck) entered in Youth and Show B. Well Savannah and Bruce both went up first in Youth and then Bruce got a date so we went out to the parking lot so he could breed with a 10-month old doe. $20 - kaching...lol. Anyway I rushed back to find out Sippi had missed his Youth class...IMAGINE how angry I was when I found out he was the only Youth EL in his class! GRRR! I was so mad and I crying because I felt like I just totally ripped away his chances of winning...it was really horrible. I had wanted him to be in Youth because I knew we standed great chances of winning but shame on me...I just had to leave right when his class was up...well at least I learned something - NEVER LEAVE THE RABBIT BARN IF YOUR RABBIT'S CLASS HASN'T GONE UP! Oh.....anyway, so we also took Willow, our Nethie Doe, but she was 2 1/2 lbs. over weight so we just scractched her from the show - didn't even bother letting the judge waste his/her time judging her when she'd be DQ'd (probably) anyhow....isn't that nice?

:blueribbon:So.....here are the results!:blueribbon:
Sippi: 2nd place (out of 2...)

Savvy: 3rd place (out of 5!)

Bruce: 2nd (out of 2)

So all in all, we did ok...nothing special - no BOB's, BOV's or anything like that....but we still did actually pretty great considering all the rabbits there!

Also, I have a question - How many of you rabbit showers/breeders keep binders w/ records of shows and all that stuff and you bring it to shows? We have a binder, but we don't know what all should be in it...so far we have in it: Copies of pedigrees (in case a doe is bred with our bucks; and so we can see if our bunnies are related to others), remark cards, Exhibitor check in sheets from all shows, show catalogs, show entry forms that are filled out and we never went to that show....so any ideas will be helpfull...pictures would be nice too though!

Thanks

Emily

Glad to hear that you had fun! That's the most important part.

Sorry to hear that you missed your class - it always seems like the class you've been waiting on all day is called the minute you go to the bathroom :X

Remember to mark all you items with your name, addy & phone number in case you forget something (such as your pedigree book) at the show. People have also been known to leave behind rabbits, so be sure to mark carriers also.

Thanks Pam.

Yeah, except in my case, it was for breeding a rabbit, and I should of stayed! I keep hitting myself for leaving...I wish I could turn back the clocks...but don't we all?!

OK great idea! Ohh, leaving rabbits at shows? What happend to the rabbits? I would be horrified if that happened, but since I have such a little amount of show stock (but not for long!) I don't think it would - I know one person at the show had 200 rabbits with her....dang...she must of spent $400 on entry fees!

The show secretaries try to locate the owners and work out transport to get them returned. It makes it much easier if you mark carriers with a name and phone number. We've occasionally transported rabbits that were left behind.

Things get hectic at the shows, and some people have others showing and loading/unloading rabbits for them. Carriers also end up spread all over the show room (especially when you have multiple breeds), and unfortunately, a carrier (or two) can get left behind :(

My kids have always been prettygood about keeping track of their stuff.

Oh wow, that's crazy. I'm fortunate never to stay behind to see any of that after a show, but I am so thankful for everyone that puts shows together and they have to do all that work. Wow..

Pam, I was wondering, do you get paid for judging rabbits? Like, if you were to be asked to judge at a show, do you get paid? I've always wondered about this.

Also, do you know Vern Palmblad??

Congrats on your winnings!! I look forward to when my daughter starts showing next year. Lots of fun! :biggrin2:Congratulations again!

I don't think I know Vern Palmblad (but I remember rabbits better than I do people LOL)

Yes, judges are paid to do shows. The average profit is approx. $100 (although I make many trips into mini-vacations, so I often come home empty-handed and in-the-hole).

The shows cover the judge's expenses of gas, hotel, food, airfare, etc. I've done small youth shows for as little as $50 total, and gotten paid as much as $500 if I have to travel far. Most judges bids probably average around $200 including expenses for shows that are relatively close.

Registrars are generally not paid by the show.

Thanks lilangel! It's loads of fun showing...my favorite thing to do is look at all the rabbits there.

Oh and my...there was a gorgeouss cream-coloured dutch! Her markings were -so- light that you could barely see them and I didn't notice she was Dutch until the second time I saw her...she was adorable!

Of course, I wouldn't be the perfect one to go with to rabbit shows, because yesterday I must of asked my mom a zillion times if I could have this or that rabbit, lol! I seriously am wanting a black dutch for my house bunneh as well as for showing. Then, there were two free Lionheads, one was a black buck who was pet quality and omg me and my sister thought about getting him and telling my mom "Look, someone just came up to us and said, "Here, he's yours". But then we brought our mom to him and she said "No" even though she loves lionheads...we have to get rid of some, build a bigger rabbitry to get more bunnehs....

Oh, but there were SO many bunnies there I wanted...I would of taken:

The Black Magpie French Lop Junior Doe (She was SOOO precious!)

The two black Dutch for $35 each (haha!)

The Blue (or Opal) Intermediate English Lop Doe

1,2,3 or 4 of the FOUR French Lops Juniors (maybe 9 weeks old?) they were sooooo precious!

Ahhh, jeez. Hand me $500 , take me too a show if I have 20 cages empty, 20 carriers with me and I'll buy the best show stock, but the cutest ones as well. lol.

That's sweet. But of course, doing it for the rabbits is sweet as well. lol. But being paid to do something you love is good.

ETA: Vern is an Oregon-based judge...but he's pretty well known up and down the western coast.
