Hey :) I just bought some Sho Supplement for my mini rexes. Its supposed to improve their fur and fleshcondition. I was also told that it helps them molt faster. Does it?

My main question is how much to feed :?

Thanks!

PS. This is what it looks like

I would start them out with very little. Like a half teaspoon. It will throw them into a moult that they won't finish if you give them too much protien. When I first started with mini-rex I read all the magazines and decided to try a very popular supplement. I was showing my first nice buck and gave him the supplement per instructions. He went into a moult within two days and I wasn't able to show him for a long time because he would't finish his fur. I don't supplement my rabbits except for a pinch of oatmeal if they are not eating well or they are nursing a litter. I also give them a few sunflower seeds if it is cold out. If you supplement all the time you will end up with a line that needs supplements.

Any change in protein can send rabbits into a molt and supplements are essentially additions of protein. So yes, it will help push them through molts faster.

I honestly probably wouldn't throw in something new thats temperary. Like Ral Rabbitry was saying, it seems if you do not get it just right that it causes more problems in the long run.

If you're entire stock is needing improvements I would look into switching brands of feed for good. If every rabbit is needing fur and flesh help it just seems like the feed just isnt working for you.

Their flesh condition is good, I was just looking for something to help them molt out a little faster. :)
Thanks for the awesome advise guys
:big kiss:

Roger, does oatmeal (guessing it would do the same as oats?) help push rabbits through a molt?

I'm curious, because my 4-H leader said dog food works, but my rabbits wouldn't touch it...and I don't have any black oil sunflower seeds on hand. :/

XD Sometimes you just can't listen to her. She was recommending putting -honey- in the eyes for conjunctavitis. o.o;;; I wouldn't do that, ever, even if it was for some reason proven to help.

Oatmeal might, if they aren't use to it. I give it on occasion... But more as a treat. X3 If you can't get ahold of anything else, and they're not on the weight limit, go for it.

I use the oatmeal for weaning babies and rabbits that have aren't eating well. I don't try and push them through a molt with feed. I do groom molting rabbits to get the dead fur off. I have found that if you try and push them through a molt with feed it usually backfires on you and they take longer to finish their fur.

I heard to change their protein in their pellets will help to molt faster.. I changed my rabbits to a better pellets then the cheap pellets and they molted a week after changed their better feed.

I will give them some oatmeal tonight, along with some dandelion greens (which I've also heard help...haha) but if feed causes backfires, then I don't want to try anything too drastic - especially bumping up protein.

I am brushing them daily - trying to get their new coats to come in as quickly as possible since my state fair in September 17th - 19th. o_O Hopefully they'll be in coat! :)

I know my older rabbits take longer in their molts, and like my 4.5 year old Holland Lop buck just looks downright ugly because of his molt, but I wouldn't change feed or add a suppliment to encourage the molt to go through faster. I just upped the amount of grooming time.

This. Not to mention the grooming time is a special time with your rabbit. You ever see rabbit buddies grooming each other? It's great bonding time.

Though if you have a heard of 100 rabbits that would get old quick. lol

Thanks guys :) Yea, they all get daily grooming/play time. The thing I was worried about was the fur coming in. I've got a show this month I hope they'll be ready for *fingers crossed* Right now I'm giving them just a smidge with their food (less than half a teaspoon)

BTW Heather, I bred Oreo with my new broken black doe, Buttercup, today :) Heres hoping for some gorgeous baby buns soon :bunnyheart
