It's been mentioned on the forum that when it is time to wean the kits that they need to then be separated into the boys and girls. Obviously I can't tell the difference or I would be having the litter so what should I do? I had taken both rabbits to the vet and was told they were both girls. Should I *try* and find a breeder to tell me? I'm going to take a wild guess and say no one is local to me. I am about 3 hours from Columbus and Lexington.

You could take them to a pet store, and they may be able to help you. If not, then yes, seek a breeder. The only breeder I know, however is in the Excelsior Springs area.....

I actually bought one of them from a pet store (I don't like supporting them but just really wanted Riley). The girl at the pet store said she was a boy, although turns out she was a girl. Supposedly the 'breeder' that bred the other one said it was a girl although I never trusted them. Never met the person as I got Morgan from my aunt but she told me the breeder said Morgan was a girl. In this area people don't take their rabbits to the vet or most probably dont' do much with them.

You could try having a go yourself its easy to learn once you get your head around it. best way is have a look at your older buns first. use thumb and forefinger at the top and bottom of their bits till they sort of extend out. your buck will have a tiny circle like a donut shape and your doe will have a slit. then go have a look at the babies.

we can usually accurately decide sex from around 2-3 weeks depending on the size of the bunny but you can keep going back and looking in case the gender fairy visits lol! you have till they are around 8 weeks old.

if you really don't feel confident in yourself or a vet then a breeder would be your best option :)um or maybe a rescue would also be another good idea. i wouldnt use a pet shop they are notorious at getting it wrong and usually go by what the breeder tells them anyway!!

We tried doing it ourselves...and you know what happend from there :). We felt they both looked the same. I have started to use another vet but haven't taken the rabbits in yet so I do not know if they are good with them or not. There is one vet recommended by the House Rabbit Society I think and it's about 45 minutes away. I do not know of any local breeders or rescues that deal with rabbits...I doubt there are any.

I would proobably take the 45 min trip then just to be on the safe side! usually if they look the same then the bits aren't fully extended out.

It looks like I was mistaken. It is not recommended by them. I think I may have just seen an ad where they treat rabbits and exotic pets.

This website has a couple of good photo's on what to look for...

As juniors, if it comes out all the way around (and looks like a dounut on the end, it's a boy. If only the front comes out, and looks like an upside down "V", it's a girl. It's not infallible. We showed a lovely Junior "buck" several times and it even got a leg as a boy... and suddenly at 6 months old (first time shown as a Senior) he was a she! (Thank you Cindy Wickizer! LOL!) But it's 95% accurate at 4-5 weeks... and 99% accurate at 8-10 weeks.

But we all make mistakes and some bunnies just fool us!

In general, most pet store employees cannot sex the animals.

My daughter recently bought a rat that the employee claimed was a female (I didn't know females rats had testicles????????????)

Anotherpet storethat I went tocouldn't sex the hissing cockroaches - Duh -who can't sex a cockroach? LOL

No, no, no, never ask the pet store people! I have wound up with so many bunnies in my rescue thatwere bornbecause people buying two rabbits were told they were both bucks, or both does. Pet store employees, at least three fourths of the time, will not know anymore that you do, and sometimes even less.
