Our megacolon girlhas been on a hay-only diet for nearly three weeks' (after a gut flora imbalance/gut slowdown, presumably caused by the ingestion of plastic).

I would like to re-introduce pellets to her diet (gauging the time frame upon how her gut regulates on hay only).I'm unsure if a regular pellet (e.g., Oxbow BB/T) is the best way to go; I've heard that megacolon bunsdo better on an extruded pellet. Sadly, only Kaytee Rainbow Exact is offered in the U.S.; I'm no Kaytee fan. :(

Can anyone tell of their experience of feeding Kaytee Rainbow Exact (extruded) pellet to a megacolon bun (how well s/he is able to digest/tolerate it)?

And can any British members tell me which brands of extruded pellets (presumably available only in the U.K.) are considered the best--especially for megacolon bunners? (I may try to see if U.K. mfg.'s of good extruded pelletscould somehow get it toU.S. bun caretakers.)

Thank you,

Jenk

Oh at the risk of sounding stupid, what's an extruded pellet?

if you want info on British brands i would suggest joining Rabbits United Forum and asking there because that's predominantly British and you will come across more people with a variety of knowledge of different brands.

Oooooooooooooooooooh the muesli mixes.

I don't have any megacolon buns but I used to use Burgess Excel mix.

I'm not super-knowledgable about them, either.

Great suggestion. I'd actually joined RUF before finding RO, but haven't been there in a long while. Guess I ought hunt-and-peck for my login info....;)

What's ironic to me is that I've heard/read that megacolon buns (and buns in general) don't do well on grain-related products. So I wonder ifthe extrusion process does something to make the grain-based pellet more usable by a megacolon bun's digestive system?

I must look up Burgess Excel; I've never heard of it before now.

May I ask why you've stopped feeding it?

I changed to the complete pellet feed and now feed Supa Burgess Excel. Generally over here it is considered the broadspectrum best to feed a complete pellet food, however there are buns that do better on different types of food. Mine do fine on this pellet so for as long as they do, that's what I'll stay with unless there is a good, solid reason to change.

i didnt know either so have googled. i am too stupid to create those little links but theres a lot about them out there.:rollseyes turns out it's what mine, and the dogs, are having as their pellets/mixer. how they break down in the gut gives less bloating and they are considered healtier.

im not a fan of those museli mixes either - my vet hates them - it was the first piece of rabbit advice he gave me:D

my gastrobuns are on science selective - the only one they will eat - as well as hay and veggies etc.

i learn something everyday thanks to this forum:)

Kathy Smith recommends it in one of her books (Rainbow exact)
I know....It's just that I'm so biased against Kaytee in general. That company doesn't really look out for the best interest of the animals (IMO). Even reading the ingredients of the Rainbow Exact brand doesn't make me feel better, even though it's an extruded pellet.
