My 5 year old mini rex has been having some skin issues for a couple of months. I ended up taking her to a vet dermatologist, and the vet thinks it is sebaceous adenitis. I have to add safflower oil to her food and take her back to the vet in 6 weeks. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this autoimmune condition?

I had a 7 yr old rabbit with it near the end of his life, due to a possible thymoma. At first I thought it was mites and he was treated for that and it seemed to go away, but then came back and I realized it was likely the sebaceous adenitis. I never got to the point of treating the skin condition before he passed from the thymoma. If your vet didn't already rule out a thymoma as the possible cause, particularly if you are seeing any possible symptoms of this(increased respiratory rate, bulging eyes, visible third eyelid), then I would suggest discussing the possibility with them.

If you haven't already, you can read more about it here.

My vet doesn't think my rabbit has thymoma. My vet first treated Flower for mites, but that did nothing. Then she said that it must be a skin allergy. The problem started when I got a new bale of hay from a farm and garden store, so I thought there must be something in the hay. I asked for grass hay, but there was some alfalfa mixed in. The bale was harvested at the end of the year, and the alfalfa had seeds. I looked up alfalfa seeds and sprout on the internet, and found that eating them can cause flare ups in people with Lupus, and Lupus like syndromes in people with autoimmune disorders. I thought maybe Flower has an autoimmune disorder that was triggered by the alfalfa seeds. Her skin did not seem to be itchy, so I did not think it was an allergy. I decided to take her to a veterinary dermatologist. That vet said that Flower appears to have an autoimmune disease, sebaceous adenitis. I asked her about the seeds, and the vet said that there is no known link. Flower's problem started in May, so her problem isn't that bad right now. I am just trying to find out as much as I can hoping to prevent too much fur loss.

Thank you for the links.
