I have a pair of satin angora rabbits. I was thinking of breeding the doe to a french angora once and then keeping a couple of does to cross back to the satin buck. Mypair are full brother sister and are already linebred. There are no other satin angora's anywhere near me. I could breed the doe back to her father but that increases the inbreeding even more. I am ok with some but would it be ok to introduce a few new genes to this line by using a french? The 2 breeds are very similar in type anyway and if I cross the F1 does back to a satin buck, then keep the F2's that are have the satin fur for my herd I would have a bit more variety in the gene pool! I was also hoping this might improve the wool a bit too as the satin angora's tend to be a bit more skimpy in the wool department!
I got these two for fiber production but I would really like to breed and show them. I am not in a rush so if it takes me a few years to get them to what I want that is ok with me.
What would you do? Breed to a french for one generation or just breed the 2 purebreds? Buying a different line of satin'sfrom a breeder and having them shipped is simply not an option for me.
