Earlier this week, Millie didn't eat her food one night and wasn't very hungry the next morning - but by that night she was very hungry and ate her food.

So on Wednesday when Sasha didn't eat - we didn't think much of it. When she didn't eat on Thursday night - I got concerned. When Art told me she drank some water and then vomited - I got downright scared.

We read about several different things it "could" be - called the vet this a.m. and they suggested it could be parvovirus. YUCK. Turns out that when I was told her shot she got was "all she needed except for the rabies" - they were wrong.

She is 5 or 6 months old...and she could have it - or not have it. We weren't sure the test would be totally accurate - there was some blood in the fecal test and it was decided that rather than spend the $32 on the test- we ought to put that money towards the treatment. (Right now they have something like 8 dogs that have it - and they were up to 10 at one point).

So we put down a $250 deposit for her treatment (they took $100 now and a postdated check for next payday for $150).

The vet (who goes to the church we were attending) said that while they do not normally discharge on Saturdays (they aren't open) - she would check in on her and discharge her to us early if she is ok to come home. Otherwise - it will probably be Monday.

It was a tough decision on what to do - money is so tight and other things were happening here....(thank God they'll take a postdated check as we've always paid well before). I talked to Dr. Laura and asked her what she would do if it were her dog....and she said that while it is expensive, she would prefer to leave her overnight where she's getting an IV and fluids and stuff than to have her over the weekend (when the vets aren't open or available and the nearest vet is 160+ miles away)....and that if we waited till Monday and she dehydrated worse - we might not be able to "bring her back" from that condition - whereby now she is stronger and still doing fairly well.

Millie doesn't understand though....and its tearing me apart to see her look for Sasha...

And I don't know why I'm typing all this out here - except its been a horrid week and this is just the typical ending of an awful week and I'm just...I don't know. I want to cry.

I hope someone on here has experience w/ Parvo and feels that Sasha has a good chance of beating it. The doctor seemed to feel like she had a really good chance...

I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this! Rest assured that she is in the best hands possible, and hopefully when you next see her she will be feeling a whole lot better. Our thoughts are with you.

Oh Peg, I'm praying that Sasha will be fine. I've not had experience with parvo, but have heard that if it is detected and treated early, chances for recovery are very good. (The only thing I can recall about parvo is from my days of volunteering at the animal shelter; if there was an outbreak one of the main symptoms tended to be diarrhea.)

However, there's also a great chance that Sasha doesn't have parvo as well - here's hoping it's a stomach flu or some other mild virus that will pass quickly. When my cat Fritz became very ill a couple of years ago - he had been fine in the morning, but when I came home from work his head was swollen and he couldn't close his mouth, was drooling everywhere; he looked horrid - I rushed him to the vet. They were highly suspicious that he had feline leukemia and said he might not live. But as it turned out, he had been scratched by another cat on the head and a rapid infection had set in...a round of antibiotics cleared it up quickly. So my prayers are with you that Sasha will be absolutely fine as well.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I see a lot of parvo at the hospital. They usually come in in really bad shape. Constant vomiting, severe bloody diarrhea. They usually pull through just fine. We have only lost one, and that was because the owners refused IV therapy.

I disagree about the test, though. If it is indeed parvo, there are two issues. You will want to bleach your enviornment so that you don't track it elsewhere. She will also shed the virus and need to be considered contagious for quite some time after her treatment.

I wish you and her the best of luck. Keep us posted!

One of the things the vet & I discussed was about "assuming this is parvo" and the things I should do when I come home (bleaching stuff, etc).

We decided it was best to assume the worst and deal with it that way...by bleaching everything and all that good stuff.

I missed the vet's call but she left a message on my phone.

Sasha isn't vomiting - but she isn't acting like a puppy should either. She feels like they need to keep her another day and get more fluids and stuff in her to see if it helps her feel better.

She said Sasha is "depressed" and I wanted to yell at the message "OF COURSE SHE'S DEPRESSED - SHE'S NOT HOME!!!!"

Anyway, Laura is going to check on her after church tomorrow and call us then.

Oh Peg, I'm sorry to hear this about Sascha. Parvo is an awful disease, and very distressing to see. At least you caught it early, and yes, I would bleach/disinfect everything Sascha has come in contact with. It is a very contagious disease.

Sorry you are having such an awful week. I'll be keeping you and Sascha in my prayers.

So sorry to hear she's been unwell Peg. Must be a scary time for you, I would terrified if my little pup was sick. My thoughts are with you, fingers crossed for a fast recovery!

Do you know what shot or shot combo she got? Many are a distemper/parvo combo.

She's a good age where chances are good it's not parvo, but with it seeming to be rampant in your area... at least she has age behind her which will help a lot.

Sasha's HOME!!!!! I just brought her home...

She pulled out her IV yesterday and decided SHE did not want any more fluids that way. They gave her food and she kept it down.

I put down a $250 deposit (between two checks) and I have $3.65 credit.....oh well....she's worth every penny.

She has some meds to take this week and she needs about four small meals a day for the first 3-4 days.

I'm so happy she's home.

She and Millie will be going in for their shots in a couple of weeks - just to make sure that they are covered on all their shots.

Yay! LOL...animals are so great at expressing when they've had enough of something, aren't they? I'm so glad to hear Sasha's now safe and sound back at home. And may she continue to feel better and get stronger!
