Thank you so much for posting this!
Does anyone know if this company supplies their romaine heads to Raleys? I bought a head last weekend but regrettably threw the tie that has the company name away and took out the trash. I have given some to the bunnies and guinea pigs. I'm deeply concerned because it looks like it was from that company.

What signs should I be looking out for? Even though I'm not 100%, I'm still tossing it to be safe.

i am surprised alot more contaminated products are not caught,,it is only when a bulk of people complain/hospitalization/etc.,that county health dept. and center for disease control gets involved,,if you saw farming and how easily cross contamination happens,,one field to another -you would quit eating,..sincerely james waller

Take normal precautions of washing fruits/vegetables well and do not be overly concerned. No illnesses have been reported with this recall. Salmonella is very common, and for all the food consumed in the US, serious outbreaks are actually rather rare.

No need to worry about it! Just make sure you wash your veggies very well.

When you guys advise that we "wash [our] veggies very well," you're just talking about us hand-scrubbing the greens under running water, right? For whatever reason, I'm envisioning salad ingredients taking a nice, hot, soapy shower.

Washing well with water is generally considered sufficient. A very mild bleach solution can also be used.

If your really worried about it you can also buy special veggie wash. You soak the veggies in the solution and it supposedly cleans them better.

degrassi,

I saw the special veggie wash you mentioned at Wal-Mart today. It intrigued me but I was concerned how healthy it truly was for my animals, though it did state it was all natural.

Just rinsing isn't going to get rid of all bacteria esp salmonella. You can try a veggie wash with grapefruit seed extract though.

I briefly perused the website previously cited; I didn't see any claim that the product would remove bacteria. Did I overlook it?

I checked, too, and I didn't find any mention of removing bacteria. It did say it would remove soil and residues, so if the bacteria was in/on those, it would come off. No specific mention of bacteria, though.

We go through so many fruits and veggies at my house, it would cost a fortune to wash everything with a special veggie wash.

I wasn't giving much thought to this until 2 of mt friends (from the same household) ended up hospitalized with salmonella poisoning.
Oh no! :( I hope they will be okay.

Thankfully none of my animals that ate some of the questionable Romaine have had any problems.
