I know it sounds a little nuts, but has anyone tried rogaine on their rabbit's feet? I'm not sure what is in it or if it would be safe.

I feel bad for my mini rex who has sore hocks again. He's indoor only, free roam. I added layers of blankets to his room so the floor is very plush with fleese on top. There's very little carpet exposed at this point other than when he's running the whole house in the evenings for exercise. His litter is changed regularly and has a plastic resting board so it is soft and dry for his feet. He's on a little diet (no fruit snacks), but there aren't that many extra ounces to come off.

I'm putting regular neosporin and plain A&D cream on his feet and they are healing nicely, but they are still bald. His little heels have been bald since I got him at 5 months old.

Although it sounds like a great idea, another opportunity to do a commercial like Muppet, minoxidil is extremely toxic for cats and people using it have to take extreme care around their animals. At least that is the warning online.

I have been looking for them on line but have not been able to find booties made for rabbits, just baby booties that have rabbits on them. Do you know of anyone that sells them?

I know my local pet store has booties for dogs, do you think they would fit well enough?

When I was looking up sore hocks in rabbits, I came on this web page. It has all sorts of different and interesting advice on rabbit medical care. www.barbibrownbunnies.com/meds.htm The most interesting of was to put meat tenderizer - 1/4 tsp ( it is papaya enzyme ) in their water to get rid of fur in the gut. Also notes the several breeds of rabbits are just prone to sore hocks. She lists the breeds. Some different advice of hock care.

Thanks, that is a great link. I will pick up some baby socks and vet wrap tonight on my way home. I think he's just going to have to wear socks when running around the house to protect his feet since the fur is so thin, which I'm pretty sure is just genetics.

maybe this one will work

The meat tenderizer info she lists is not correct.
Papain meat tenderizer is from Papayas and Bromelain is from Pineapples. All you do is look at the ingredients in a generic meat tenderizer and one of those will be listed as the first ingredient

Mini rex do not have well furred feet and are notorious for having sore hock problems. Some worse then others but it is genetics. Breeders most commonly have problems with this since majority keep their rabbits in all wire cages. Most avoid problem by selecting against rabbits with bad feet problems. The bigger breeds that must be kept on solid floors also have this problem

WE've had this issue with our mini rex Taffy. We got lots of fleece that we put down in her cage a couple layers thick. I left a *little* spot of wire for her to go potty but besides that, everything was fleece. I kept it clean and applied triple antibiotic ointment, and it cleared up in a few weeks (not all the way, but got much better, we still have to be careful).

If baby socks don't work, maybe try doll socks [for larger dolls]. Or find someone who knits or make from felt. Felt might be your best option, if you sew. After you got felt from a craft store or wherever, draw a pattern on paper & go from there. You'd need an oval for the sole, a wider half-oval for the top, & a small fraction of an oval for the heel. Keep the seams outside.

Here's pictures of the sock attempt. Serious foot flickies ensued, but they stayed on.

Haha that is too cute... We must see some more socked bunny pictures.

Hopefully it helps with the hocks, and who knows maybe he'll eventually get used to them? It is adorable though, and you even got blue ones to preserve his masculinity :p

:yeahthat::biggrin:

You will be happy to know the socks do not hamper his escape abilities. He is sapposed to be on room lock down until his hocks heal (come on, it's half a room, it's not like he's in a cage!) because I can put blankets down in his room but not cover every carpeted surface in the house. He still escaped and ran down stairs, with me chasing him, foot flickies the whole way. Once he was upstiars he nose bonked Sophie in the butt and scared her so bad she wet the carpet and ran back to her side of the room. I could hear him snickering the little turd. :p
