The first time I got married, I married an animal lover. If I told him I wanted an animal, he let me adopt it. A teacher I worked with had kittens and I asked the ex if I could have one, which he of course said yes. I brought home the cat on the left. We were eating a brand new flavor of Edy's ice cream, named Rootbeer Float. We decided his fur, with swirls of vanilla and swirls of brown rootbeer color, made that a PERFECT name!
Three weeks later, the teacher asked if I wanted to bring Rootbeer Float's brother home. I did, and he was christened Shere Khan. Both were neutered and declawed soon afterward (don't rag on me for the declawing thing...I didn't know any better). Unfortunately, almost 10 months later, I was pregnant. Shere Khan had spent those extra weeks before he came to me, as an outside cat. He was never really happy inside, and showed his disapproval by spraying and marking things around the house.
When I got pregnant, I tried as hard as I could to get him to stop spraying...to no avail. So, I found someone who wanted this beautiful boy and he went to a new home.
As for myself, I had a beautiful baby boy and a husband who moved across the country as soon as he found out I was pregnant. He was living with 7 other people in a townhouse apartment. We couldn't bring our pets with us. I rehomed the ferrets, fish, frog, mice, conure, and 2 rabbits, all with friends. My mother-in-law at the time took our dog, Sarya Jane, and Rootbeer Float into her home.
She was a good mother to my pets. They adored her and vice versa. Sarya passed many years ago. This past weekend, at the age of 14, Rootbeer's organs gave out and he passed on. My son was devastated at this loss. He cried for most of the evening.
Today we went to the feed store to buy dog food and hay for Poe. When my daughter ran to the back to get the hay she heard mewing kittens. Of course, I had to go back and take a peek. There were three 4-week old kittens in a pet taxi. Story is, a bum came in to the feed store with them and basically dropped them off.
I had my son call his grandmother, my ex-mother-in-law. It took moments for her to decide that she would take two of the kittens, a boy and girl. I offered to drive 45 minutes, half-way to her house to bring them to her. My feed store had bathed them and took care of their fleas. They gave me wet food, kitten formula and two bags of chicken soup for kittens as they get older. They let me borrow the pet taxi, and the vet tech arrived while we were there to take the third kitten home with her.
We drove down. The kids each held a kitten on their laps instead of in the pet taxi. Sometimes they took turns holding both. The boy kitten was a big explorer. The girl was happily purring as she was stroked. We gave the kittens to a teary-eyed woman and her husband, who immediately christened the boy, Rootbeer 2! My son named the girl, Ginger.
I know they'll take wonderful care of these two lives. They will spay and neuter them and give them a loving home. I didn't even think to take photos, although I even had the camera in the car, but I was promised photographs as they grow. I'll share when I get some.
I feel good about this. I needed to share. Thank you for reading!
