I adore rex rabbits but neither own any or breed them:( I have just come across two things lately that confused me.
1. I saw rabbits advertised that were apparently a cross between a French Lop and a rex and the person claims the babies have "lovely rex fur" Is that possible? I always thought both parents have to be carriers to produce the fur? Recessive gene?
2. I was mentioning to someone that I am not too keen selling BUBs to people that intend to breed. The person suggested to use a BUB (ND) for her Mini Rex. Why would you do that???
Can anyone enlighten me?

I too, believe it's recessive.

I would imagine they want to crossbreed a BUD/BUB into their mini rex to try to shorten the bodies.... All though it'd be a lot easier to get a nice mini rex... LOL!

1. It is not really possible for the French Lop/Rex babes to have completely rex fur, however it may be softer than the usual French Lop fur because of the rex mixed into it.
2. You are very right in being cautious about BUB's. I cannot see any reason why anyone would want to use an ND and a mini rex. First of all, it will completely ruin the mini rex coat, and have the same effect as breeding french lop & mini rex. It will just make a long coat that is softer. Second, mini rex type is extremely different from netherland dwarfs so all yo will get is ugly little crossbred babies. Whomever is telling you this, I would not take their advice.

That may possibly be a reason. Getting anything "nice" in Ireland is very difficult so maybe that is what she is planning to do.
I'll also take on board what Lela said. By the way I am not planning to cross rexes with my ND it's just someone who was looking for breeding stock mentioned that and I was just curious if that breeding had any merit. At least if she does ask my advice I have some idea:)
