It has come to my attention that the other thread was never followed thru to fruition.

Being that it is a new year and we could all use the encouragement and support, time to support a new thread.

There will still be a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart or Target for each 6 month increment's biggest loser, however it will be done on an honor system.

This will be a place to post recipes, exercise tips, offer encouragement and support, there will be no downing of yourself or others. It serves no purpose.

I am taking myself out of the running for a couple of reason, but will be participating for a couple of reasons as well.. so lemmie go ahead and explain.

Since May of 08, when Jarred died, I have lost 102lbs. That is not typical weight loss. I also skate 16 hours a week. It is grueling and time consuming. 3 mandatory nights and one optional afternoon. Before eachsession of hardcore skating we doover an hour of either stretches, cardio,or strength training, depending on the night, we switch it up. My food intake is drastically different, and not for everyone.

I am here to lend support and offer exercise tips if needed. Many of the things we do can be done with little to no extra equipment.

I posted some pics of my progress on my Facebook.. so I will repost them here as well..perhaps it will provide some inspiration.. I know for me, the last time we went to the bar after practice, and I pulled out my license and looked at the pic, I was shocked.. and all the girls looked at it and they were like.. "no frikkin way that's you!"

I don't want compliment's, or kudo's.. or anything like that.. im not seeking praise.. I am posting these to show progress. There was a time in my life.. not even 9 months ago, I resigned myself to be a miserable out of shape mom.. and thought I was never going to be happy.. and my life was never going to change.

Your life can always change..there's always room for improvement.

To quote one of Heath Ledger's lines on this, the anniversary of his death.. "a man can change his stars.."

A woman can too..

Who's with me girls?

Here's my DL pic Takin in Jan of 08..

This is from maybe 2 months ago, if that.. you can definitely see the difference in my face.

I remember you & I talking about losing weight about a year ago - and how hard it was/would be....and look at you now.

WOW.

I think I'm one of the few forum members who has the privilege of having met you in person - and let me say - your face isn't the only thing that has shrunk. I think you've been losing in the assets area too....and it looks good!

(I'm not saying your assets look better than your face - I'm saying the weight loss is even more noticeable there).

You've done really great. I know you had one blow after another last year....losing your "third son"....getting ill....etc. etc.

But you kept picking yourself up - now the derby keeps you losing weight.

All I can say is...

[align=center]
YOU GO GIRL!

wow zin you look great.

i met you sometime befor augest you?look wonderful.

i need to start loosing i am 5 6 and 270.

i have started walking my dog a hour or close to a day but i need to change my eating habbits.

hopefully in a year i could be under 200

I'm all for joining the weight loss thread. I don't need gift cards, just some place to go to get some encouragement. I've gained 35 lbs in the past year and ahalf so I need to do some work too. Sharing recipes and exercise tips is a great idea. I'll post a "before" pic when I get home from work.

Good idea to start another thread! Classes at the university started up again today (I took last semester off), and there's a lovely big gym on campus that I'll be able to go to for free.

I did manage to lose about 20 pounds in 2 months last year, but I've gained about 15 back- I lost it for my cousin's wedding.

I was going to join this thread last time round but never got to it.

I currently weigh about 14 stone. Ideally I'd like to get to about 10 but thats gonna take a lot! So I think I should probably aim to lose about a stone or slightly less.

For me I know the key in my weight loss - its to eat lots of protein (red meat) etc and steer clear of carbs (bread, pasta, potatoes).

I'm trying to keep to my gym 4 times a week. I've been to the gym today and went swimming afterwards so hopefully that has helped.

I also need to stop snacking and stick to three square meals a day.

I think for me its not a case of just eating salad and stuff, I just need to be more balanced.

Tonight we are having chicken and lemon with broccoli and potatoes. Not sure whether to have the potatoes or stick to green veg.

Does trying to drop a dress size to fit into that slinky number for an upcoming wedding count to join the thread??? Or is that just vanity:biggrin2:

Don't stop snacking - snack SMART.

I lost 50 pounds last summer, and for me, eating something HEALTHY every two to three hours is key. If you eat smaller meals five or six times per day it speeds up your metabolism.

My favorite snacks were fruit, almonds (plain), low-fat popcorn, protein bars, even low-fat ice cream treats or frozen fruit bars. I just tried to keep the snacks under 200 calories.

I limited myself to a total of 1400 calories per day and exercised three times per week. That might be too few calories for some. You should probably ask your doctor what would be right for you.

Good luck to everyone!!! You can do it!

I find calorie counting really difficult because I eat a lot of fresh stuff which doesn't have the calorie amount on it. I really should snack healthily I guess, but I know once I have one snack it turns into 'oh, just another apple, Oh, just another cereal bar'. I think its just easier for me to stick 3 meals.

Ok so I have a question.

I was going to start doing yogurt for breakfast to help me with my real bad eating habbits. My question is.

What is a good yogurt there are so many I cant imagane them all being good for you and also what are goood snacks to eat. I have been eating what ever storm does not in the fridge but whjat abou7t boxed stuff.

Yay! I've been being really good...

Sunday - Orange for breakfast, (didn't have time!) Prawn Salad with carrots, lettuce, peppers, sweetcorn and a little bit of mayo, with a low calorie fruit drink and an apple, for lunch. Dinner spaghetti bolognase, but with loads and loads of meat and a smaller amount of pasta.

Monday - Orange for breakfast, Pasta4U carbonara (a bit naughty but I was out with a friends. She had curly chips and I resisted!), dinner, veggie rice with extra bell peppers and tikka sauce, except I wasn't hungry so only nibbled like half of it!

I'm trying to stick to the lots of protein one day, lots of carb the other. My Mum did the same diet and lost about 3 stone, and about 4 dress sizes. Basically, if you are going to have a big pasta meal, you only have a tiny amount of meat. So yesterday I had a really big pasta which had a little bit of ham in it, then in the evening I just had rice. Today I could have a steak as long as I don't have any pasta...

We've also given up bread in our house. No more bread, ever. Its my favourite food too but I must resist! It bloats me and I can gain a pound in a day just by eating bread.

I'm kinda hung at the moment.. im fluctuating between one pound diff.

People have asked me, aside from the skating what do we do..so here's basically what my life/exercise/food routine is day in day out.

So here goes.

We now hardcore skate 3 days a week required, a 4th night is a free skate night, open to the public, which is the night we meet and greet, and then spend an hour after the rink closes doing basic skills, with no workout before hand, very light and easy. It's also a required night in addition to the other 3, Sunday is not required, so i've started not going, and spending time with pouty man.

Daily, I wake up.. and go to a pilates class, and also do a bit of light strength training on my arms and back, because I had hell picking myself up from falls when I first started out. I eat a protein shake for breakfast. I have a daily multivitamin, a super omega 3.6.9 and a Gluco/Chondritan for my shot joints. I have several small meals a day, varies with egg whites, tuna in water, grilled chicken, fresh veggie snacks, rice cakes. grilled fish, brown rice, leeks. Noon I have another Gluco/Chon....before practice I have a good, but light meal, my last Omega 3.6.9, and my last Gluco/Chon. On the way I have NOS energy drink. Throughout the day I have water, water, water,....that is KEY!

I drink no carbonated beverages like Coke or Dr. Pepper anymore.. no breads..no sweets. I just don't have the taste for them anymore. I don't eat past dinner, which is around 6:30..

My one vice is 2 nights a week, my drinking team has a Roller Derby problem, and I have a pretty high tolerance for stout beer now.

As for practice..we arrive, 10 minutes of hot laps, which is basically skating as fast as you can to warm up. Then it's time for stretches and workouts..

Sit ups and crunches.. we do the basic crunch.. 75..the leg over arm out cross combo 75.. switch to the other side.. 75 of that.. leg ups crunch 75 of those as well. 150 situps.

We do assorted stretches ..basically just to make sure we dont get pulled hamstrings and stuff..

We lay down and do the bicycle.. for 10 minutes, which sounds easy, but when you've got a helmet, and full gear AND 10lbs of skates on.. not so much.

We then move to our backs and do the pelvic thrust thing.. where your skates are flat on the floor, back down, and you keep your butt off the floor, and you can do this without skates and get the same burn.. it's just maximized for us cause were also trying to keep from rolling off.

And on to the thing I hate.

Hate.

Push ups..

4 sets of 25 each..

the normal wide stance..then the normal shoulder width, then the cursed diamonds.

And yeah.. none of us can get thru them.. at ALL.

Then it's time for water and on to drills.. which varies from hitting to skating in packs..triangle drills.. and our fav.. skating on your feet..meaning.. skating in a squating position, which sounds easy enough... but you have to squat.. and keep your arms and hands straight out.. not resting or balancing on your body.. for a full minute.

Yeah.. ya can't feel your butt by the time your done.

Or your thighs..

Some times we do charming things like take the skate off one foot and use only that leg..strength training.

Our other fav things.. fall drills.. purposely throwing yourself on the ground to learn how to fall..

And then we do cool down laps..

So that's how my stuff goes....and now i'm tired just reading it.. seriously..

And to think.....all those videos make derby look like FUN.

HA HA...it sounds like real work. No wonder you've been losing weight...

I'm glad you are enjoying it though.

I just had the most tasty salad every. Lettuce, carrot, yellow bell pepper and prawns. I'm stuffed! I'm going to go for a cycle round the park I think, or maybe the gym... haven't decided yet!

I'm glad you brought this back up, Zin. I have been trying-and failing- to lose weight since Timothy was born, almost a year ago now. I usually don't tell anyone this, even my Hubby doesn't know how much I wiegh, but...*deep breath* I am 5'3" and weigh between 185 and 190, it swings back and forth. Right before I got pregnant I had lost almost 20 pounds, but it has come back with interest since.

I eat yogurt for breakfast most days. I make my own, but many people don't want to do that. It's not that hard, but can be tedious when I HAVE to do it every Sunday. (I do it because it's cheaper, and I don't like additives or preservatives in my yogurt.) I make mine plain, because I don't care for the fruity flavors or super-sweet things, and sweeten it with a little honey. I also mix in about a quarter cup of Grape Nuts cereal to mine. Just that little bit of grains adds some fiber and makes it a *lot* more filling. It's less than a serving of cereal, so while it does add some calories, it's not a ton, and it's unsweetened, so no extra sugar. Sometimes I mix it in and wait a few minutes so the Grape Nuts get soft, other times I eat it quick while the cereal is still crunchy.

Be careful when you're buying yogurt, things that are just advertised as "low fat" often have extra added sugar to make it more tasty. You'll have to decide if less fat or fewer calories/less sugar is more important to you. I think the "best" yogurts for you are plain (unflavored), and made with 2% milk. But if you don't like plain, and end up adding sugar, you might be better off with a flavored one. Or get plain, and mix in JUST one teaspoon of honey, or one teaspoon of fruit jelly.

It's also more economical to get a big tub instead of individual containers, but I can't be trusted to measure out just one serving from the tub.

I love carrots, so I snack on those a lot. (I get the 5-lb bags of whole carrots, so they're less than a dollar a pound;once a week I peela weeks worth, and since peeling and trimming them is a pain, I never end up preparing more than I need.) I also like low-fat mozzarella cheese sticks. Since they're individually wrapped, I can just grab one without having a whole open package tempting me.

Granola bars are often advertised as healthy snacks, but they usuall have lots of sugar. For other boxed things, I recommend measuring out just one serving, the size is listed on the box, then putting the box away and just eating what got measured. I could easily eat a whole box of Cheddar Bunnies, but I won't let myself.

My weight has at least stopped increasing since I've been more aware of serving sizes and sticking to them. I think if I was't too lazy to exercise, I'd be seeing some weight loss at this point. At least I'm not still going up. :expressionless

%hanks beth I got on a extercise kick then for some reason one day I dont go and stop going.

I have a set of tenis court right by my apartment so if I dont walk to the dog I have a easy out. I let them run over there or at the beach which is across the street from my house.

When I get on my kicks I walk them about 1 hour a day then take them to the tennis courts also. I do vbbike phoenix but biking does not tire me out enough to be doing anything.

I have been trying to watch pertions also. About to hit 300 I need to do something quick. Marti Gra is this weekend I will get a lot of extercise out of that LOL.

I am going skiing tomorrow and I just know I'm going to eat badly! I bought some food for the journey there and tried to be better than I have normally been but my Mum kept saying 'Why don't you get this packet of sweets?.. this bag of crisps?' etc. I ended up getting the naughty stuff but trying to make it a bit healthier, like getting salt and vinegar rice cakes rather than crisps, and low fat jelly and stuff... hope I can make it through the holiday!
