Hey, everyone!

My boyfriend's younger sister bought a Guinea Pig and had him for about a month, then realized that she and her mom were really allergic to him. I offered to take him so that his sister could visit when she wanted to. However, my boyfriend lives with me and he is also allergic to him!I've never owned a piggy before, and I really like him. He's so friendly and happy with life- I really want him to go to a great home. Anyway, I just thought I'd ask you guys :]

Here is a picture of him!

Awww piggies are such great pets. It really really really sucks being allergic to them. I sent mine away because I thought I was but then I found out I had pneumonia. So I really dunno if I am really allergic to piggies. They are so sweet. I had my first piggie when I was just 3 years old and they hold a special place in my heart. I hope you find a great home for it!

Oh, that's too bad.

What about getting an Air Purifier with a hepafilterfor the allergies? That could help. Or, what about keeping the pig in a different room away from your bf? Any way it could work?

Aw, he's so cute. For some reason he looks like his name should be Kyle! I don't know why. I hope you can find a way to keep him or find a great home for him!

I love guinea pigs!

Have they tried changing his bedding. Many times the allergies are to the bedding instead of the guinea pig itself.

I agree, change the bedding. I see you are using some form of Carefresh as bedding. It is rather dusty and gets gross, from my opinion. I had a hard time breathing and sneezed a lot when I used it.

Use 2 layers as fleece as bedding, with two layers of paper towel underneath the fleece as well. Fleece has no dust, is easy to spot clean, and keeps the piggie cleaner. Piggies LOVE popcorning on fleece!

The only thing you will have to do more often is change the fleece. I would say every 2-3 days WITH spot cleaning (picking up poops and throwing away). You can get fleece remanants or cheap yards of fleece at Walmart or any place that sells it. Just look for the sales, Joann's always has fabric sales and coupons that come through the mail!

When it is time for a cage cleaning, just shake the used fleece outside to get all the hay and left-over poops off it, then throw the fleece in the wash! You can keep reusing the fleece....which saves YOU money on bedding that you throw away.

Don't give up yet! My fiance was extremely allergic to my pet rats when I first brought them home, but I bathed the rats once and kept the cage really clean, and within a few weeks the sneezing stopped. He just needed time to get used to them. I also don't let him handle my rats because when they scratch him the scratch puffs all up. I think he is allergic to their pee.

If putting Mr. Piggie in another room with the bedding changed to fleece (keep your man out of that room!), doesn't work...then let us know and we will help you further!

I agree with Amy, don't give up yet!

I used to have terrible dog allergies, but once I started spending time with my friends dogs instead of avoiding them they gradually got better, and now I am fine with dogs. It amazing to be able to pet and play with a dog, whereas before I couldn't even sit in a house where a dog lived!

I also used to be allergic to piggies, but again spending time with them each day have made the allergies better. Give it some time, you might find you are able to keep him! :)

Hey, everyone. I just wanted to give an update on the piggy!

We tried changing the bedding AND getting allergy shots, with no luck :(

So, I joined some GP forums and put him up for adoption, and a wonderful woman came today to get him!

She is a vet at Michigan State University, and the piggy is a Christmas present for her 8 year old son. I'm soooo thrilled that he's going to a great home :biggrin2:

So...this means that I have more room for rabbits now...haha!

Thanks for your help, guys!

-Kathy
