Wecelebrated Veteran's day yesterday with almosteveryone (but my school that is) gettig the day off from school andwork. I have no relatives that died in the wars, but both mygrandpa and step-grandpa were involved in a war.

Thank you for the very importantreminder. On Monday, I took my son Matthewsee apresentation by one of the former guards of the Unknown Soldier'sTomb. We're hoping to get to DC next weekend to visit some ofthe memorials - I'd really like to see the WWII Memorial.

We also live near the Avenue of 444 Flags (pictured below). We went last week to view the many memorials they have in thepark. The 444 Flags represent each day that American Hostageswere held in Iran from '79-'80. There is also an eternalflame dedicated to the 8 servicemen who lost their lives during thehostage crisis. The hundreds of flags are an awe inspiringsight. A Canadian flag also flies to honor the Canadians whorisked their lives during the hostage crisis.

In great honor to the Pennsylvania servicemen who were on duty duringthe Gulf War (including my brother) - PA Voters passed a proposal toset aside over $20 million to disperse payments to each veteran.

Whether or not we agree with the reasons for sending our troops to war, they deserve our respect for risking their lives for our country.

To all our living servicemen and to those who lost their lives servingour country and protecting the freedoms of people worldwide . . .

We thank you!

We had our remembrance service at schoolyesterday because a lot of our old pupils died in the first and secondworld wars. It's always a very sad service and I can honestly say theonly service whereevery single person stays quiet andlistens.

*Humbled by the grace and honor of all whoserved, or continue to serve...those who lived to come home and carrythe memories of unspeakable horrors in their minds and hearts, andthose who will never return*

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

We had a wonderful time inDC.It wasawesometo see all thememorials and to see little Matthewexperience the awe ofthings he's only previously read about in books.

Here's a photo that he took from the top of the Washington Monument(500 feet high!). It's a view of the WWII Memorial in theforeground, the reflecting pool in the middle, and the Lincoln Memorialin the rear. The Vietnam wall is up near the Lincoln Memorialto the right (blocked by trees in the photo). The Koreanmemorial is to the left of the Lincoln Memorial.

We did a lot of walking andwe're exhausted!

Here's one of my favorite shots. Our white Jeep in the foreground and the White House in the background.

I've never been to DC, so I was very excited! LOL
