I was hoping someone here had some experience with Angora rabbits.

The big, fluffy body of wool that they have - when does that tend to grow in for a rabbit? They're not born with it, are they?

I ask, because in Indy's adoption photo at the humane society she had NO WOOL. She looked like a little black, "regular" rabbit and at first I had thought it was because they had shaved her, but I have since shaved her a bit myself and there is still a stark contrast. So now I'm wondering if she looked that way because she was a lot younger?

Basically: Is there a particular age their coat grows in, or am I completely off-base? It would be nice to know if I would be able to age her from a detail such as that - I'm a little picky about those things because I'm 100% neurotic.

No, they are not born wooled - but by the time they are weaned, wool is evident. If she had no wool, she was probably VERY young.

For some reason, that doesn't make me feel better at all (knowing she was alone) BUT at the same time she doesn't look like a baby so maybe it was just the best shave in the history of ever. Perhaps poor nutrition inhibits the growth? I'm full of too many questions, sorry.

Disclaimer: Not my photo - belongs to the humane society, but I always keep them as a reference point. Imagine my surprise when I expected this and got .... Indy haha.

When we shaved her partially at the vet a few weeks ago, she was still grey/silver/blueish under all that mess and they shaved pretty far down - which is why the question was raised for me.

Her fur does look longer in that photo. I think based on the angle, that it doesn't look as long as it might have been. You can see the lighter colour on her back which you would not see on a regular furred rabbit. It does not look shaved, but also not as long as it could be. She does look younger in that photo, but not like 8 weeks, maybe she was a 3-6 months old?
Black rabbits with wool tend to look more grey. The back tends to be more on the tip of the hair, with a greyish colour further down.

That's what I've noticed with her now - she's getting a little bit of her black tips in again, now after all her trims.

Which of course means I should trim her again :nasty:

Thank you guys for your input! I am happy to hear that they were potentially pretty close on guessing her age - I didn't think it would bug me so much, but it kind of does - if only because I have no idea how many candles she may need on her BDay something or other which I shall arbitrarily celebrate in August regardless. :littlecake
