This past week or so I've noticed Harvey has been laying down sometimes a bit funny. He is completely on one side, with all 4 feet stretched out, and one side of his head lays on the ground. I'd seen my other bunny do it occasionally. I've caught Harvey doing it at some point every day. It has been very hot this week...

Is there a particular reason rabbits do this? Pain? Heat? Relaxing?

It can be feeling very safe and relaxed, heat can do it too. I have a bunny who does it with anxiety.

Anothte prossibility is also illness so it's worth keeping an eye for any other differences.

I would think that the heat is probably a culprit though, what measures are you taking to keep them cool?

I think it is the heat too. He is a very attention crazy bun, so he does hop up from this position whenever I go check on him. He is usually an outside bun, though I do use the term outside lightly. He is in very protected area. Whenever it is over 80, or I feel that he is to hot, I bring him inside.

So today, for example he is in an area of my basement that is his area to play and come inside. With the tile floor and cool of the basement, he is easily 30 degrees cooler and happier :)

Is it safe to be outside in yoru area, temperatures wise? When you bring him in, how long is he in for? Like, do you put him back outside at night when its still warm so he has to do a huge temperature change?

Most of the time, yes, it is safe for him to be outside. My vet says to bring him in at temperatures over 85 and/or if he is displaying signs of being to hot. I bring him in at 80 degrees or like I said if he is looking hot even if it is a lower temp.

I really can't give a precise answer on how long he is in/when he goes out. It really depends on the weather. Generally, he is inside for hours as the temperature doesn't start to cool off until night time. When it does start to cool off I open the screen door to let some fresh air in A. for him to get used to the temperature outside and B. basement air isn't the best. Eventually, he goes back out when the temperature/him are ready.
