We have had frank for almost 3 years, hes about 31/2 years old now and the only time I have ever heard him thump is out of anger after I have to hold him to clip his nails or brush him.

tonight though we were sitting watching tv and he was in the dining area and I heard 3 hard fast thumps and I ran in and saw him completely alert facing an empty kitchen and breathing hard and fast. he was in the middle of the floor with no wires or anything to chew on and get shocked by. just freaked out.

he hates being held but i picked him up and he tucked is head into my arm and hid and sat with me for a good 30 min before he went to the edge of the couch for a few minutes and finally jumped down and just slowly checked on and scanned the dining area.

he seems better now, but still very alery. his body posture is more relaxed and his eyes arent bugged out anymore but his ears are up and pointing all over the place.

has anyone had this before? their rabbit just getting scared out of nowhere? I have tried getting to his level and looking into the kitchen and there isnt anything new in either room that would surprise him? no weird smells (that I can smell) or anything?

It's happened a lot to me. Sophie is scared of many noises. They have very acute hearing and smell so they can pick up smells and sounds that either we are not aware of or that don't seem scary to us. All you can do is reassure them and stay calm, offer a treat and speak soothingly to them. I also sing to Sophie when she gets scared.

It could have been almost anything, a sound outside, a different smell, even a spider or mouse running across the floor (something different that's moving). I can't have the curtains opening in the evening with the light on, because Bandit gets scared by his own reflection. Strange noises outside get him, plastic bags (but only certain types) and various other things sometimes. They're very perceptive and see/hear a lot more than we do.

For several days, Bandit was very panicky and freaking out, trying to escape and jump/climb me to get away from something. It took me a long time to work out that the thing he was absolutely terrified of was something that I had sat on the edge of a bench instead of usually near the middle. So from his view, it looked like the item was looming over the edge. I moved it away, and he was perfectly fine after that. It's weird, because other new things/different arrangements have never bothered him, just that particular thing.
