We've had our sweet Nibbles for 3 weeks now. Before we brought him home we purchased this cage:

and this xpen (minus that little door; it's 24" high):

We have the cage set up so that the door opens into the xpen. We leave the cage door open when we're home and put him in his cage when we're out. I let him out this morning and got busy fixing myself some breakfast. Suddenly I heard a loud cage rattling noise, looked over and saw Nibbles ON TOP of the cage! I ran over and got him back in the cage (thankfully).

The cage is only about an inch or so shorter than the xpen, so I knew the next thing he would try would be jumping over the xpen! Hubby and I talked and we decided we should get the NIC panels and build an xpen with those instead. I got a great deal at Sears (46 panels for $36!). Anyway, I've constructed a taller xpen (28" high) plus a roof so hopefully that will deter jumping over that. On top of the cage roof I zip tied some cardboard pieces, so if he tries to hop up there again, there won't be anything to grip (again...hopefully).

As I was looking at this new set up, I wondered: what if we removed that slanted roof and added NIC panels above it to give him more space in the cage PLUS make it too tall to jump on top of. Has anyone modified a cage like that before? Would it work? I'd love to hear your ideas/suggestions/comments :) Thanks!
