My agouti (and I am not even sure which agouti type lol) female rabbit just had 7 babies. I know that agouti is dominant and that there are two (err, forgot the term for the letters, alleles? this is why I have Google!), um letters and one can either be another agouti or a recessive color, but I only know that she has the one A(?).

The father was white with almost lilac/tan spots and he had lavender/red colored eyes.

All the babies appear to be very dark gray in color.
One or two almost appear to be black.

So I guess that means that all the babies will be agouti colored like the mom?

Or could there actually be a black one?

Not that it matters, but it would be neat to have some variety lol! ;)

"A " gene is the pattern of the coat. The Agouti pattern (A) is the most dominate type because that's what wild rabbits are. Next comes (at) which is the tan pattern, and then (a) which is self or solid color.

The B gene is the coat color gene. If your doe is darker than that makes her in the B catagory. B is Black family which is dominate like the A gene. Dad being white with a broken pattern will be in b catagory, which is the diluted Black or Chocolate family. That's where lilac comes in.

I know genetics makes my head spin and thankfully we have some really knowledgable people here that speal this genetic thing off like it's nothing. And when they do that, I learn a lot as you will too.

Can we see pics?

K:)

I can't help with the genetics part but im getting okay at color id. Pictures would be awesome if you have some?

Going along with what grace said do you know the history of the grandparents and great grandparents from a pedigree or were these bunnies from an unknown background?

These are just mix breed rabbits (I assume).
I don't know what the grandparents looked like, dad came from a friend of my husbands who originally bought him from a pet store.
Mom came from the same person, but I don't know her background.

I was just trying to see if any could maybe turn out a different color than agouti.
lol I shouldn't even have used the term genetically challenged as that implies I know something!

I will try and post the pics of mom, dad and babies.

All the babies are dark like mom.

Does the dad look harlequin to anyone else but me? And the mom does look agouti although what kind of agouti is really hard to tell with the lighting in that picture. Hate to ask for more picture but do you have side views of them or at least ones in natural light with no shadows?

Babies could also turn agouti my chestnut agouti babies looked like black otters when they came out but when fur came they turned into chestnuts lol

I would also really recommend against breeding pet store bunnies. Rabbits almost never give you a profit if it is for money and health risks come with every mating but are increased if you don't know the history of those animals. And trust us breeders and rescuers there are enough rabbits to go around two times over without any help. Don't mean to come off as anything but trying to help and look out for the buns welfare

Dad does look like a Harlequin to me as well. Tough to really see Mom, but I have to agree she is Agouti. Black Chin or Chestnut.

You are absolutely right.
I have another thread with a little background on this litter;

Well, I went out for my daily check on the babies. (I try to only go out there once a day, so mom doesn't get mad) -
and now I can see two distinct colorings on the babies.

There are 3 grayish ones and 4 darker almost black ones.

Grayish (agouti type?) baby:

Darker (black?) baby:

At least it'll be a bit easier to tell them apart!

First one is a Blue Agouti Blue in rabbits is grey. Took me a while to get that one right too. Even if you watch the video on Neville's "Big Boy" thread, I still call it grey. lol It's actually blue.

Second one is Black Agouti

With Dad being Lighter, he thru diluted colors schemes in there. That's why the coloring so different between the two. Both Agouti, but with the diluted factor one is lighter than the other.

The first one i would say chinchilla and the second one i'm guessing just black?

EDIT: I also read through your other thread. I'm sorry for the loss of your boy. It's always hard to lose buns. Oops litters, it may sound bad, but are actually good learning experiences. You can learn what went wrong and the best way to fix it or keep it from happening again.

None the less congrats on the healthy babies and definitely watch them grow because it happens so fast.

So yup it looks like you've got chestnut agouti's (like Mom) and blacks in this litter. Agoutis often look black at birth and the only way to tell them apart is by the white on the belly and the inside of the ears, but it's not until that white ticking starts to come in that you're able to tell WHAT kind of agouti you have. :)
