Ok, I couldnt figure out what topic to catch attention. Hope it worked.

Here is my question.

My mini rex doe hurt her leg 2 months ago..took to vet and she had a sprang (cant spell) in her ankle..which said could cause nerve damage for her foot to be non responsive..it could come back but then it could not.

SO. SUCKS..poor girl, cause I REALLY WANTED to show her. I am sure her lame foot would DQ her. SO She has blood circulation..and etc. She puts weight down but her foot IS non responsive. She cant move her toes or spread them. She has use of the leg but not the foot. SO I am thinking after 2months it may be permnant. But i am hopefull.

So would I still be able to breed her when time comes I find a red buck for her? She has a good pedigree and is super gorgous.

She is in good health other then the foot.

Please dont get upset at me for asking...I am asking for the right reason to see if it would be suggested its ok or not.

Thank you.

Misty

I don't see why anyone would get upset with you I think we would all be in the same boat with a good looking doe :)

I think for me anyway it would depend on how well she gets about, does it cause her any pain and most important do you think it will be an issue when she kindles ( cause they have to get so far under themselves to deliver the kits)

Hi :)
THank you for replying. She gets around good. She just has that foot hover at times cause she cant use it. The vet said it would still get circulation etc.just wont be able to move the foot from ankle down.
I really wanted to show her.
But ya she gets around good :)

if she can still use it, i don't see a reason why not. It is still able to put pressure on it and she can stil move enough to preform her other life functions, I see no physical reason not to.

For me, if a rabbit has anything happen to them I feel horrible do not feel it is right to put them through it. A small illness is one thing, but something big I will not do it. But, if you feel ok with it and she does not seem to be in pain then do it if you want. However, I would probably breed her once, keep the best doe and then retire her. Breeding is VERY hard on does and all the stress hits them very hard. I have a terrible time keeping weight one does with babies, even with all the extra added protein, ect. If she was to lose to much weight with her lameness may be much harder on her.

Did you ask the vet? Although most vets do not breed they may have good thoughts and opinions on it.

I dont have a problem with my other does with weights when they have kits. Always have had good luck with that. But you have a good point about possible breeding her and keeping the best little doe from her. Just so I can have a good doe from her and her lines. Then retire her.
She can do all of her life functions...and no I didnt ask the vet, I feel breeding questions would be best answered here..
Thank you for your thoughts :)

I don't think I'd breed a doe with permanent foot damage. It would be one thing if she hurt it, healed, and was fine. But if she's still experiencing some handicap from it, I don't think breeding her is a good idea. Only rabbits is good health should be bred.

Excess protein should not be used to keep weight on does and can actually be harmful to the kidneys. There is no reason to exceed a maximum 18% protein (16 is most commonly used). Too many calories are also used in metabolizing the excess protein. Carbs for the body to use for energy are a much better choice.

However, I do agree that the sprain should be given a chance to heal, as theweight a pregnant doe carries will cause additional strain to the limb, as will jumping in and out of the nestbox.

Maybe I worded it wrong? For my does with babies they get oats and barley 5 times a week or so? A little sprinkled in their food, as well as some diffrent grasses. All the other rabbits get it, too, but not as often. I have saw better condition in my rabbits since I started doing this than I ever have. My current doe with babies is keeping her condition, last time she did not and she was on the same pellet diet. She did have more babies but they where not near as big as these.

I dont plan to breed her when she is ready if her leg is not healed enough. I will re take her to the vet in a month to see progress and go from there.
