Rabbit Abscess

Good afternoon,
I have some on going issues with my rabbit and Abscesses! She turned 4 in July and she started suffering with her abscess just before she turned 4, she started with one large one just underneath her eye, her vet successfully removed it without surgery as it had popped, and it didn’t return for a few months, she then recently had a couple of small ones on her face and one large one underneath her jaw that he cleaned out today, her vet said that they are seeding in her face he looked in her mouth and said she’s also lost a tooth due to her abscess! does anyone have any recommendations for me that I can do, I have heard echinacea is very good for the immune system but do I buy drops or a sort of hay mix? I have also heard manuka honey is meant to be good but her vet said it doesn’t do anything to help? Any suggestions will be great thank you!!

Manuka honey is mostly for wound management after the vet has cleaned out the abscess, and with the rabbit also on the proper rabbit safe antibiotic.

The echinacea might be good to try in conjunction with antibiotics and other prescribed meds, just as a boost to your rabbits immune system. I haven't ever tried it, but have read of others using it, both as a tincture (no alcohol) and as the dried herb. But do some research on it.

Has the vet done a culture and sensitivity test on the bacteria, to determine the best antibiotic? What antibiotics have been tried and which one is your rabbit currently on? Have head xrays been done to check for further dental infection?

If you aren't currently taking your rabbit to Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital in Camden, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion there. They're one of the better knowledgeable rabbit vet clinics in your area. Or check the rabbit vet list below. But a more specialized rabbit vet might be good if you aren't currently seeing one, since this is a more complex case of a head infection, that also is involving dental disease, and the infection will need pretty aggressive treatment, especially with the rate of spread.

Hi @JBun thank you for your advice it is very helpful, I found a echinacea (alcohol free) do you think this would be any good? She has finished her antibiotic course earlier today she was on them for about a month.

Like I said, I have no experience with it, so I have no idea. I just remember reading personal posts on various rabbit forums, about it being used. You would have to do some research to find those personal accounts of rabbit owners using it. You could also ask your vet about it.
