I'm going out to look at paint colors in a few minutes. I *may* paint my livingroom and hallway this weekend.

My question is how do I paint right up at the ceiling (it has a rough surface) without getting the paint on the ceiling?

You're going to have to tape it off somehow. Then, use a paintbrush for the top and bottom 6 inches or so and a roller on the rest of the wall.

We do it similar to missyscove, but we don't use tape. We paint the edges carefully with a brush first, then roller the rest.

You may also want to check and see if they have any nifty gadgets to help you. I know last time I painted, we bought a little gadget that was designed to paint the top 3 inches (and I guess the bottom 3 inches) of a wall with out getting paint on the ceiling. It had little rollers that you placed on the ceiling and the rolled the tool across the wall.

I would talk to the employees of the paint store. It's their job to help you figure out how to paint. They should be able to set you up with all the proper tools and techniques.

Good luck! What colour are you thinking?

Thanks guys! I went to the store and bought a paint roller with an edge on it, as well as a white "guide" and tape.

I'm doing the hallway now and will stop there but may do the entire living room that color if I like what I'm doing. The lighting isn't the best in the house when it gets darker outside so I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into.

I just fixed a slight dent in the wall and am waiting for the stuff to dry, then I'll do that last part of the hallway.

It's a light blue color I'm doing... I *hope* it turns out the way I envisioned it. I kind of wanted to go darker but I figured starting out light would be better in case I hate what I have in mind and want to change it back to the light wheat color.

We always edge before painting with the roller. If you have a rough ceiling, you have to do it by hand and easily. I have crown molding so I don't have to worry much with that.

I have textured my ceiling also - what a mess! lol.

I'm actually considering putting up border so I may not go all the way to the ceiling afterall. It just depends on how motivated I am.

My hallway is too dark to really see, so I did a bit on one of the short walls in the living room. I'm just out of motivation right now so I've stopped but here are two pictures to show the color comparison:

It'll look different in the daylight I'm sure but for now I'm happy enough. The color looks a little odd in the second picture - I think the slight dampness and flash distorted it some.

My furniture is just too light colored to sit in front of the light colored walls I think.

VERY nice! I like it....... did you know that I have a room (that has bunnies in it) that is red, white a blue?! I have Red walls, white ceiling, blue mini-blinds and all patriotic/barn/sheep stuff in it. :D

I would LOVE that! My house is very patriotic, or will be once it's put together. I can't wait to see the finished product but it seems work in any house is never truely done.

Oh, believe me! It is never done! We've lived here over 14 years now. I have painting to do again, we need siding, we need new cabinets (they were brand new when we moved in but the guy did a bad job of putting them together)_....

I've always worked on the "front" of the house or the main part and it never fails - the laundryroom was always last to be done....... it's never been done LOL! I am trying so hard to find the time! but I want to do so much other stuff and here comes Christmas...... *sigh*

I think I've got most of it done! I may have touch-ups to do, but for now... WOW!

It's funny too, going with my patriotic theme - and this was unintentional:

My back deck is done in brick red. Coming in fromt there you go into the dining room and kitchen, an off white color. Then you walk into the newly "blue" livingroom with the blue hallway to the left.

LOL

Now I have a huge mess to reorganize and curtians to hang as well if they didnt fall apart when I washed them.
