Hi Guys !!!

Most of you know that I have a Harlequin Dutch.

My question is: Are they supposed to be noisey rabbits???

Whenever you got to her she always makes a noise, doesn't matter ifshes playing with you or if your changing food, water,etc.... It is a grunt (but not an annoyed grunt)

Are they know for being so vocal??? She only really starteddoing this more and more since her companions died (1 died last year, the other, year before).

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I have a black and white dutch. He isvery vocal. When he is excited and bounding all over theplace he makes this boingy boingy noise. When he getssomething he really likes to eat, he snorts like a pig! When he isaggravated he sounds like a goose who has had its tail feathers plucked!

I seem to always know what he is feeling he is veryexpressive. There is never any guessing with him, unlike someother rabbits I know?!

Last night I was making some popcorn in the microwave, as soon as heheard the popping he tore into the kitchen and sat on his haunches bythe microwave, grunting like a pig until it was done ( he will not eatcold popcorn, it has to be fresh out of the micro) LOL

It's funny 'cause my dutch is the exactopposite. I can barely get him to purr/grind his teeth when I'mscratching him. I've never heard him grunt or anything of the sort. Iguess it's just on a bun-to-bun basis.

Hi Susan

I thought Big Mama, was strange coz she's so vocal, but seeing as yours is too, maybe its a breed trait ????

I tried looking all over for something about them, but found nothing.

Its nice to know, I'm not the only one with a vocal bun.

Shuu, WOW it must be quite, by you !!! Maybe I should have turned this into a poll. Oh well.

Loki grunts when he's going to be pickedup. He's starting to get more vocal as he trusts usmore. I remember Gypsy saying dutches were very vocal.

Very sorry to change the topic but I LOVE YOUR AVATOR!!

I'm not sure about the vocal thing in dutches, but i have 2 lionheadsthat make one big racket all the time too. Then again, its mostly whenFlops around - i think they really dont like him! Not sure why though :?

There shouldn't be a rabbit at school. They don't belong at school. Andif she's scared she should be taken out of that environment. They don'tlike to be handled, even by their owners.

At the shelter, Loki had a card on his cage that said he liked to bepicked up and snuggled. The poor thing was simply too scaredand too weak from lack of exercise to fight back. He thoughtthat interacting with people meant being picked up by the scruff of theneck and lugged around and then plopped back in his cage. What worked for him was to let him come out of his cage on hisown. I would let him hop around the floor and I would justwatch him. I would only move to touch him if he needed to goback into his cage or if it seemed like he'd be okay with me pettinghim. He was amazed and thrilled with the freedom. Now he nudges us all the time, encourages us to chase him, and begs fornose rubs. He still does not like to be picked up, but that'snormal.

Also, your dutch may not be a talker. Shuu's dutch doesn't talk either.

Shuu, I think that rabbits could be okay in aclassroom if they are well taken care of. That means dailyexercise, gentle and infrequent handling (unless the rabbit likes it),toys, and something to hide in so it isn't stared atconstantly.

I do agree that if it's scared, it should be a house rabbitinstead. Many rabbits just don't have the temperament tohandle lots of kids like that.

With all the bunnies we have had the pleasure ofknowing, I don't believevocalization isa breedspecific thing. We have Dutch that talk up a storm, we haveDutch that have never made a sound! We have a Mini Rex thatsqueeks when you pet her! Comes over and asks to be petted, but squeeks! LOUDLY! We had a Jersey Woolie buckthat purred. Had a lop rescue that grunted when fed!

And I have a Flemish Doe that makes all kinds of noise until I do pether... then she's so quiet. Yet my favorite giant girl hasnever made a sound or given bunny kisses. I don't think ithas anything to do with breed. They each have their ownpersonality, just like us!, and some of us are definately moretalkative than others! LOL! Me included!

Pernod never shuts up!!! She chatters away mostof the time - when she's waiting for food, when she's eating food, whenshe wants pets, when I'm petting her, when she's cleaning herself, whenshe's sleeping. I love it. :D

Vicky peeps, honks and oinks when shesexcited...when getting pets she makes these quiet sighing noises.........ive only heard an occasional snort out of freddy when he triesto drink too fast and gets water on his nose.

You gave us the talkative one BlueGiants! Anubis the Blue FLemish will honk, buzz, squeak, and toothpurr.

His honking is usually a call for me, he buzzes for the kittens.

Oh, and he wiggles his lips without making a sound... we call thatmuttering ;) Like he is muttering under his breath aboutsomething

Oh, he's muttering under his breathalright! He can't figure out why, now that he's in the house, you need those other bunnies there! LOL! He's theKING!
