Since I've been reading things on this forum, I've seen that a lot of people only feed their buns pellets once or twice a day. I've always given my bun a constant supply of pellets and timothy hay. As far as I can tell, he's not overweight. He eats mostly hay, I have to refill the bowl about every other day. The pellets he munches on, but only goes through a bowl about twice a week. Is there any reason that I should cut back on the pellets that are available? He's never been one to stuff himself, so I never worried about it. Also, his favorite treat in apples. But I've never been sure how much I should give him at one time. I usually cut the apple in 8ths and give him one or two at a time, about twice a week. Is that too much? Or can I give him more?

Final question. I think I should keep better track of his weight. What type of scale would be good to buy for him? Last time I took him to the vet he was about 3lbs.

It sounds like free feeding works for him because he doesn't gorge himself. Most bunnies will eat until the pellets are gone, which is why we feed a small amount once or twice per day. Also, when you feed every day you can easily monitor whether he's eating or not. If there's always a big bowl of pellets, it can be easy to miss if he is sick and off his food.

You can use a postage scale or a kitchen scale to weigh him.
