I recently bought a tool to cut my bunnys nail and have been cutting them every day getting him more and more comftorable at this point they were very long and im working on them I notice on one of his paws he has he has a black nail that curves and overlaps a bit of his other ones is this normal? Hes a black and white dwarf bunny and how do i know how much to clip his nails they were very long before and i just clip the tips bit by bit.

Hello and welcome!

Black nails are the scariest to cut but you can make it easier by having someone hold your bunny in a blanket/towel (a bunny burrito) and this makes it easier for you to get the angles right to cut them more effectively.

If the one nail is curved, just gently pull it away from the others and cut the curl off it, wait 2 days and trim it again, wait another day and trim it, wait another day and so on until it's comfortable for him. Waiting 2 days and then a day in between each cut allows the quick to recede so you don't accidentally snip it!

It's always a good idea to have styptic powder on hand just in case.

One little trick is to squeeze gently on the nail cutters without cutting, and if your rabbit flinches, then you are probably too close to the quick.

--rabbits in the wild do alot of digging - this friction wears down the nalis,,--our captive warriors however don,t have this ability,-therefore ,one never truly gets comfortable trimming these nails, because you can easily injure them,,bad enough cutting wrong will allow the blood to come forth...-it is best to have someone hold said bun and using special trimmers(for rabbits)- calculate only trimming off a short piece--you will be glad you did--having flour (pilsbury)close at hand,-(special precautions for abnormal growth nails which pose another risk.)--figure if the nail is more than an inch long, only trimming off a quarter inch...please read between the lines here because there is no room for error,,exercise caution it can be done,,--sincerely james waller :USAflagwaving::whistling

another way to figure out where to cut on dark nails is to have someone hold up a flashlight behind the nail.

if you've been trimming them that frequently, I would cut back to doing it once a week, that way you give the quick time to recede back towards the "normal" length... once you have the nails cut to the length you want to maintain, you'll only need to do trims every 6-8 weeks.
