When you quarantine your rabbits, how far from the main herd do they need to be? I bought 4 rabbits from a breeder. Long story short, what I was told was "allergies" is apparently snuffles. While I've had them since October, the rabbit with the "allergies" just sneezed. No discharge, no wet nose, nothing on the inside of her front legs. This morning my daughter came up to tell me that Nora (mini lop with "allergies" AND Twila (really nice 7 month old California doe) were both sneezing, and there was a white discharge. I put Nora in the milk house and Twila in the back of the barn. But how far is far enough away?

Right now the only other rabbits in the original rabbitry (a horse stall) are the French Lop doe, our California buck (those two came from the same place and same time as the two that are in quarantine) and my pet, Romeo.

I have a feeling I'm going to have to cull every rabbit there, even Romeo. :-(

Just keep them in the milk house. There's nothing wrong with keeping both does together since they came from the same place. ;)

I had two does that I bought from a breeder and I was told they had allergies. I kept them in my main barn and nothing ever spread. I did end up removing them from the herd as I was having bad luck with them and THOUGHT they had snuffles, but they were indeed just allergies.

I would watch them for a while, and treat with Sulmet (you can get it in the cow/swine section of your feed store for about $11) and see how they do. Mine never improved and that was why they were removed.

As long as there is some type of barrier, that should be sufficient.

I'm hoping they will be ok . . .

Thanks, Pam. I've just very discouraged about the whole thing. It's one thing to have problems if you purchase rabbits from a pet shop or rabbit mill. But it's quite another when you do research, find a breeder that shows healthy rabbits, talks about their wins, and then sells you something that they KNOW has problems. If I lose every rabbit, I'm going to think long and hard before purchasing another one.

Emily, I separated them to make sure that they indeed have the same thing and that one didn't have allergies and one came down with a cold. I read in The Domestic Rabbit that you should give them chlorinated water (1 tsp./gallon) so I've done that. I just pray nobody else gets it. :-(
