Why , why is my doe (Jazz) pulling fur?
She is in with her daughter (fully confirmed that Iggy IS a girl).
Jazz has been separated from her son since he was 10 weeks old, give or take a few days.

Then on top of that Timmy, my old doe who is mostly free range pulled a heap of fur yesterday and I have now put her in a crate with hay bed etc.

What am I missing?

I have 2 neutered males and one baby who is now 3 months old and he is not neutered but he is not allowed ANYWHERE near the girls. No even through a cage.

Getting Jazz spayed is on the top of my bunny to do list, I am saving up for it.

Timmy is too old to spay or so the vet told me. She must be around 6 or 7 years old.

Will a bunner pull fur for any other reason other than the dreaded possibility of babies??!!

The only reason my Jazz had her last litter is because of a gender fairy mistake....Husker was "diagnosed" as a girl by 3 different professionals! Husker now lives at his new home and has been there for 4 months. His testes did not descend and he was ...how can I say ...poorly endowed.;)
I don't think I can handle a litter of kits.

I work hard for my bunners....fresh grazing areas, lots of healthy food, cuddles, all the care they need.

I have 6 bunnies and thats my limit.

Please, please, no babies.

The fur pulling could be a pseudo pregnancy and fairly common; it occurs in unspayed females and is hormonally driven. The doe will pull fur and build a nest ....

Are you sure that you separated them at 10 weeks ? I don't think anything could happen at that age.

An older doe can be spayed but only by a vet that assures you that she can..in other words if your vet is not comfortablespaying a doe that age better to look for someone more comfortable with it. HRS will spay/neuter even older buns.

Are you absolutely 100% sure that izzy is a girl?

Don't freak out ..if you have the age that you separated and the sexes correct then it is a pseudo pregnancy.

Thanks Angieluv :)

I am going to prepare for the worst but going to pray for pseudo pregnancies.
I have read about that.

Its just that my resources can cope with 6 bunners and all the time and effort needed to make sure their lives are bunny heaven and to have to bring a doe in and care for her for 8 weeks with her babies is something I don't even want to think of right now.

I have 7 rabbits asI just adopted 2 fosters last week even though I should know when to stop..
I TOTALLY understand the fear of greater numbers
Pray for pseudo pregnancy :D
testes on a male don't descend until 12 weeks (just read that)

Yeah Husker was already 6 months when him and Jazz got up to no good!;)
He had no testes and even the breeder who rehomed him for me said he was a bit of an oddity...a girlie boy she called him...poor thing.

Well the chances of me having 2 does going through pseudo pregnancy is high.

I mean what are the chances of a real pregnancy, with 2 neutered males?

I want the best for my bunnies and if I did not severally constrain myself I could end up running a rabbit farm:shock::biggrin2:

I know how you feel angieluv, they are addictive and such sweet little humble creatures that I would save every bunny that came to me.

However if we end up with babies there are going to be tears too as I am going through a heap of depression and my bunnies are good therapy for me, I enjoy playing with them etc and I am really not up to the demands of a bunner family.

Jazz is the most brilliant Mum I have ever heard of though so I guess there is that positive.

Surely Timmy is too old now?

I am dreading the thought of wild bunnies where I live.
I know they are around but they don't come up to where we are and our land has horses too so there is a lot of activity and vibration over the ground. Lots of cats too, not much of a life for wild bunnies and their warrens.

oops duplicate posting

Jazz seems well and so does Timmy, Timmy is being especially affectionate today.

I don't believe it's possible for a wild buck to get a domestic doe pregnant. Something about them being genetically incompatible?? Someone stop me if I'm wrong here, LOL.

I've also heard that a wild rabbit does not genetically match a domestic and that a pregnancy cannot occur. Sometimes pet rabbits get impregnated by feral (stray)rabbits that look like they are wildbut wereonce domestic pets and somehow managed to make it outside

They are okay but I am not, very distraught over just becoming a single mum to 3 kids.
My bunners are all well...no babies in sight. :)

Keep an eye on her! I just got fooled with a doe that I thought wasn't pregnant. She was bred on 8/1 and I palped her at 11 days and felt nothing. She was carrying hay when the other does that I bred were due and I palped her again. She is a good sized doe and has had a litter before so I felt sure she wasn't bred but I gave her a box anyway. She had nothing on the day that the other does were due and I palped her again and felt nothing. She either has abs of steel or was carrying them in her lungs because she surprised me with a litter of 7 tonight after I pulled the nestbox which she showed no interest in except to eat the hay. It's a good thing I gave the rabbits their hay when I got home from work. We went out for awhile and I went to give the rabbits dinner and she had 7. Boy do I feel stupid but they were fine.

I went throughthis about two weeks ago with one of my fosters. Totally fooled me. I had ten rabbits at the time and wasn't prepared to deal with more. Thank goodness it was a false alarm.

Thank you for all the replies, my bunners are surely well looked after because RO is our second mama....I just pop up any rabbit related concerns and at once, feel like I am with family.

Jazz has stopped pulling fur, she pulled a lot and in two different places. Her little daughter Iggy has nestled into the hay and seems to think Mum made her a nest :p

Timmy is still pulling her fur every day but she simply pulls it out in no particular place, just as she is walking around :?

Timmy is usually very affectionate but lately she has become very very smoochy. She nestles against my feet when I am trying to organise her dinner and simply plops down in places where I can't get past easily without stomping on her.

I am keeping a very close eye on my unspayed does.

There ARE wild rabbits around here and I was hugely relieved to hear that they may not be able to breed with my donestic buns.

I will update if there are changes but for now, its seem sot be a false alarm.
You can never be too sure though so I have prepared a warm nesting box for each doe and they will fine if there are babies but lets hope not:)

Just a side note, wild rabbits can and often do impregnate domestic rabbits in New Zealand :). Our wild rabbits are the european rabbit and are what our domestic bunnies were bred from.
