So as you all know we have a foster bunny right now. He came to us with these crazy inch long toenails (not kidding). There so over grown that they grow to the side instead of straight out. The vet says they have to come off a bit at a time to shrink the quick. So there still very long and he was having playtime and he broke one. It was bleeding at the joint but the nail is still there. Its not hanging but you can tell its been severed from the nail bed. Well the vets closed all weekend and I did get the bleeding to stop. He seems fine but now what? He is in his clean carrier to keep him still. Will it fall off or should the vet remove it. What else should I be doing. He is a two year old neutered male polish dwarf weighing about two pounds.

I've had the same happen with a rabbit. They sure do bleed a lot don't they!
If it looks really pulpy, it might be something for the vet to look at, but if it's completely torn off or just broken with a shorter nail left, as long as you've stopped the bleeding it should be okay. I would clean it up and maybe put some neosporin (no pain reliever) on it.If it has been torn off it may or may not grow back. Fiona tore off a nail and it ended up growing back normally, but that doesn't always happen.

When you say "pulpy" I am assuming that you mean torn skin or flesh. It looks a little red is all. The nail itself is not damaged just the joint around the nail was bleeding. He is currently hopping around the living room an does not seem to be phased. I will get some neosporin tomorrow for the area around the joint. I know the pain reliver is toxic so will be sure to be careful.

Hmm, that is interesting. I would be concerned that his toe might be broken, but I'm not sure that the vet could really do much for that either. Personally I'd just clean it up and keep an eye on it. If he acts like he's in pain or it starts to swell and look infected, then I'd seek veterinary advice. I'd probably also cut the nail back as short as you can.

Also you could use a damp cloth on the broken nail, not icey cold, but cold. That will also stop the bleeding. I would take him to the vet. There is a 24 hour vet here in Bremerton that sees rabbits and they are good. Their number is 360-377-3801. I am not sure if they are open right now, but you can check. Dr Little is very good with rabbits and knowledgeable. So is Dr B, he is just starting out in rabbits but he saw Sweetie and he did really good. Give All Creatures a call and see if they are open, then you can come this way.

Thank you Katie for calling me and letting me know about his broken toenail. I hope that something can be done about it.

Thanks for all the great advice. I looked again and his nail is actually loose so I know its the nail. The problem is his nails are so funky from not being trimmed EVER that his paws look like human hands with the nails as long spread out fingers. I will try to clip more nail off I'm just worried about the quick.

Have you tried to call All Creatures here in Bremerton to see if they are open? If they are open you can take him there tonight. They are a 24 hour emergency vet. They are expensive though. But it is better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry I am not home and left my phone on the bed. Pudden was good this morning and I am on my way home soon. I will be letting him out, scrubbing his cage and putting him back in today. I also have some neosporin for his foot.
