Well Christmas is off to a sucky start. My mom took my grandpa into the hospital this morning. Since oct he has had "fluid on the lungs"(as my grandpa put it) but said he was fine and was on anti biotics.:rollseyes My grandpa is 85yo, lives alone(but just down the street), is VERY stubborn and doesn't tell us anythingay. So i'd keep asking him everyday how he was doing and he'd say fine. Well 3 months go by and he is still sick, getting worse and his stupid doctor is still thinking this is just something regular and giving him his 3rd round of antibiotics. :faint:

So we knew my grandpa was feeling bad as he started letting my mom drive him to get groceries(we live in canada were winter driving is cold and scary),he wasn't coming over for sunday supper, and he actually let my mom come with him to a doctors appointment!!!! His doctor is an idiot and thought my grandpa was fine but if my mom was concerned she could take him to the ER for a cardiac checkup:banghead. So my grandpa must have been sick because he agreed.

So my mom takes him this morning(8am) to the ER and they have been there all day(its now 6:30pm) for a full cardiac work up. So it turns out he is really sick. His legs are extremely swollen(edema) as is his whole body, so they put him on super diuretics to try and get the fluids out.He has sores on his feet, which is very bad since he is diabetic. He is also in congestive heart failure(which we figured and explains the fluid on the lungs among other symptoms he has) and they think he had a "silent" heart attack back in oct/nov. He has been admitted to the hospital and they think he will have to stay atleast a week, so he is going to miss christmas :( The doctor said he might get a day pass to come for dinner tomorrow if he feels better though. But he wasn't sure if he wanted to or not. We might just hold off and celebrate christmas on Ukrainian christmas eve instead.

I'm so pissed off at his stupid family doctor!:X How can you think a 85yo with any sort of illness is "fine"!At the appointment he poked my grandpa's leg in front of my mom and said his swelling wasn't bad at all! He is a complete idiot!People like that shouldn't be allowed to practice medicine if they are going to give such substandard care! I"m also pissed at my grandpa for being to stubborn. If he would have just told us he didn't feel good we would have helped him. Atleast now he is letting my mom be involved and is working with her and the doctors to make a care plan. I'm also pissed at my stupid uncle(my mom's brother who lives far away). He is a freakin' doctor yet he doesn't care at all about whats happening! My mom called to say she was taking him to the hospital and he won't even call her back! He barely even talks to my grandpa. He's an ass!:X Ok rant done

This is so crappy. Grandparents, illness and christmas don't mix well for me. My grandma died on boxing day of congessive heart failure :tears2:(thats why i'm kind of freaked out), and my other grandpa died on the 28th of a heart attack. I'm just glad he is getting help and is stable and ok for now. Its just hard that its around christmas which makes it even harder on my mom.:(

So say a little prayer for my grandpa so he gets better fast and can come home soon.

Thanks for listening, sorry for it being so long but I needed to tell someone and didn't want to have to call and talk to my "real life" friends about it, lol.

I'll be sending some prayers to you, you're mother and your grandfather.

I know what it is like to have rubish doctors treating a grand parent. My grandmother is now in a wheel chair and had to move to a care home because she was sluffed off in the ER and the hospital doctors after that as well. She had a bad side effect to a medication that they put her on (leached all the potassium from her system) and it took them three months to figure it out.

It seemed that doctors had less regard for my grandmother because she was 97. That just because she was old, she wasn't worth their time. It's a shame. I really hope that attitude changes.

I hope your grandpa gets the care he needs in a timely fashion and that he recovers nicely.

My prayers are with you and your grandpa, I hope he is feeling better soon.
I too know how it feels to be on the recieving end of a shoddy doctor! I still blame to this day the doctor that saw my grandpa for what happened to him. For over a year my grandpa went to the doctors complaining of stomach troubles and I believe struggling to eat, he was kinda stubborn too and didn't like going to the docs so, we new it had to be bad for him to go that much! But alike your doctor he, just said he had a tummy bug and gave him antibiotics too. A year passes buy and eventually it was my uncle, my grandpa's son who is a doctor of medicine, who finally got him into a hospital and what does he have, cancer! He was diagnosed with a few months to live and passed away in jan 2000. He was my best friend and I miss him soooo much but I couldn't help but wonder that maybe if the doctor took more action it could of been caught and maybe sorted sooner.
Therefore I am sorry to hear of what you and your family are going through and again my thoughts go out to you all.
:hug2:

Thanks everyone,

Grandpa is feeling a bit better now that the fluid is being removed and the swelling is going down. He is still going to have to stay a few more days in the hospital. Mom has to find him a new doctor and get the home care setup too.

Christmas eve we brought him some of our ukrainian xmas eve supper to the hospital and then came home and ate ourselves. It was just me, my brother and my parents this year(my sister is moved away) but it was good. Thenm after supper, we just sat around the fire and looked at all the old family/baby picture albums. It was really nice.

Christmas day was good too. We opened presents and had breakfast, then brought some lunch to grandpa. We had a bunch of people for supper as some relatives came in from the farm to visit grandpa and stayed for dinner. Then we invited a few friends of my parents which we knew had nothing planned, so it turned into a big thing with 10 extra people. Which was really fun, as it was nice to just visit and laugh all night even though we were all really tired. Thankfully one of my aunts is a caterer so she brought a bunch of food, lol.

So thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Even though we were sad and stressed, we were still able to have a good family filled christmas :)

Prayers to your grandpa and your family... Hope he continues to feel better but I totally understand that stubborn streak... had an asthma attack two weeks ago and my hubby wanted to take me to the hospital but I made him drive me around the block so I could decide if I needed the help - two breathing treatments were needed but they fixed me... hubby wanted to call the ambulance and I put my foot down... leave it for someone who really needs it.

May your grandpa heal and get home quickly....

Denise

Please Keep those prayers coming.

Grandpa is still in the hospital and went for some more testing today. He finally went for an angiogram. Mom just got back from the hospital and said that he has bad blockages in 3 of the main arteries, 1 is at 100% and the other 2 are 90%. It was too bad for them to try to do an angioplasty today, so the doctor/surgeon is going to come talk to them tomorrow or something.

So its not too looking good :(

I'm so sorry he is sick, I had to go through having a sick grand parent in hospital and not being sure what way it's going to go just a few months ago. It is such a hard thing to go through. Your granda is in my thoughts. My pm box is open xxw
