Hi All. Hoping to get some advice from the forum.
We took our rabbit, Penny (10 years old), to the emergency vet yesterday (Friday) due to what looked like diarrhea, but wasn't super watery. Her poop was the consistency of chocolate pudding. Note that Penny was active and eating at this time.
The vet is rabbit savvy, but not our regular vet. The vet did x-rays that confirmed no blockage and no gas. She said the diarrhea "wasn't the bad kind", but she was still concerned. The vet gave us antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory for the gut, and pain meds. She seemed to suspect an infection, but was not sure. She said to bring Penny back today (Saturday) if she got worse. She seemed better in the AM, was eating, and did some regular poops, so we decided not to take her in.
However, this evening she is seeming more lethargic and less interested in food. She will take some food and treats - just not as much as usual. I am now worried as I have read that mushy poop could be a precursor to stasis. The rabbit savvy emergency vet is now closed until Monday due to the Christmas holiday. I could take her to the regular emergency vet, but I know from experience that they have no idea how to treat rabbits.
I have Critical Care and baby gas drops - both of which I feel comfortable giving her if I suspect stasis. However - here's my question. If Penny stops eating and pooping, do you think I should give her Reglan (metoclopramid)? I have 5mg pills of Reglan that were prescribed to me - so not from the vet. Are they safe for rabbits? Should I crush these up and mix with water and administer? If so, what is the appropriate dose?
I only plan to do this if she gets worse, but I want to be prepared. I would appreciate any advice. I will take her back to the rabbit savvy emergency vet when they open on Monday.
