Popcorn and Pancake

This is a very new sound for him to make. He started it three days ago. At first I thought it was tooth grinding from pain, I got him to the vet ASAP and she found nothing wrong with him. He’s eating, drinking and pooping normally.
He seems to make the sound the most when he is grooming, but I’ve heard him do it when he’s exploring and playing too, just not as often as when he’s grooming. It sounds like long nails quickly tapping on glass. I have no idea what it could be as he’s showing no other signs of pain and as I said, the vet gave him a clean bill of health. (I also know it isn’t purring, his purring is a much softer, longer sound that he doesn’t do often)
