I was driving along a fast dual carriageway and this 'thing' shot out from the verge, ran straight into a car, and was thrown away.

At this point I was closing in and I could see it was a squirrel. I did the only thing I could, to make sure it was dead, and I drove at it and ran it over again. I feel so bad :( But it was the best thing to do... I think?. I think it was already dead because it wasn't moving, but I wasn't sure. I couldnstop the car and actually do anything else for it.

Poor Squirrel :(

My sister mercifully did the same thing as you, Flashy, when she encountered a skunk who'd been HBV (Hit by vehicle). She wanted to make sure the suffering would not linger on. My thoughts are with you. Watching a creature die or be killed "removes" a piece of our caring heart. You are valiant, and posting about this demonstrates your Good Heart, how much you care. May your feelings be comforted as time helps you heal. TF

There are times when we can only do what ends the suffering soonest..... I'm sorry you had to make that decision.

Thanks :( the other week I took a pigeon to my vets to be PTS because it had a completely mangled wing. I wish it had been a less busy road so I could have got the squirrel and done something a little less barbaric, but hopefully it didn't suffer, and that's the important thing.

I was supposed to be going to the RSPCA but I couldn't face it. I just wanted to cry.

Poor squirrel :(

You did the right thing. I run a wildlife hospital, and I've never seen a hit by car squirrel make it.
It's hard to do what you did...but it was the right thing, as much as there is any "right" thing to do in that case....

i think it was the "right" thing to do, because the poor thing must of been in pain. it must ogf been teribble for it, a rib through the lungs, heart...
but it is happy i think that you done what you did. as eileen said, she has not seen one make it.
hugs

i was going to edit what i said above but its to late...
but it might of been harsh..
sorry if it was

i thought it was harsh because i wrote about the ribs puncuring the lungs/heart ect and i realised it would not make you feel much better
im not a very good person for consouling people.

Nah, don't worry. You did fine. You're right in what you said and those things could potentially have come from it hitting the car in front and so what I did potentially did save it the pain and misery.

Thanks for replying :) And also thanks Eileen for telling me that I did the right thing.

Flashy..

If it helps. I am known as the Squirrel-inator. When I got the big Orange Dodge Ram truck 3 years ago, I was driving it for the first time, and a squirrel ran right out in front of me and I couldn't stop.

It's happened 2 more times in that truck.

When I got my Dodge Challenger, it's happened the exact same way, 2 times.

I even drove my husbands Hummer..it happened once..

Something about me and my aura.. like the plants in "The Happening" cause people to off themselves, apparently I give off some sort of pheremone that makes squirrels want to kill themselves.

I cry for days everytime it happens.

Yours was a mercy type thing.. mines just freak weirdness..

My point is, your heart was in the right place, and you had purpose..
