This hadn't really occurred to me until just now and came in my mind out of nowhere. Has anyone heard of water bottles, the kind you buy in the store for drinking water for yourself, causing cancer? I have. It's something about the plastic releasing toxins into the water when heated up by leaving the bottle in a car during a hot day or by putting it in a dishwasher.

So, now I transferred this thought over to my bun, Nibbles. Can that same thing happen to bunnies from their water bottles if they are plastic and put in the dishwasher? I'm thinking about switching to glass now that I've thought about this just to be extra safe. What are your thoughts?

though i prefer crocks/or thick bowls,,i do also make available plastic water bottles/i use bleach and baby bottle brush to clean out the green bacteria -(periodically-i do not use a dishwasher or high heat,..plastics-pvc-polyvinylchloride-products can collect toxins when used for-plumbing underground drinking water//as far as high heat,i simply won,t drink/eat anything which has been heated up in plastics,,,what i would like people to be aware of is teflon coated cooking pots and pans/there is aluminum under the thin teflon coating which is extremely toxic to all of us,,the best thing to do is don,t buy them/donot store food in them,,aluminum will build up in your system, just like lead,,..thank you for your thread,,sincerely james waller

There's no conclusive evidence showing that the plastics can cause cancer, but it is known that BPA is an endocrine disrupter. BPA is commonly used in plastics #3 and #7. Other plastics can release toxins into things they are touching when they are heated, especially in a microwave. There are some studies showing that BPA can possibly be linked to carcinogenic activities in the body, and is especially harmful to babies and children. (In some countries, it is now illegal to sell baby bottles, etc. containing BPA, though in the USA, I think, plastic containing BPA is still used to line the containers of baby formula.)
I prefer to use ceramic crocks for my bunnies' water. I have heard of some bunnies that do not like using a crock, and for those bunnies I would clean the water bottles as James does.

It always astounds me when I see someone heat food on a styrofoam plate, get the food too hot and it melts the plate a bit, but they eat the food anyway. Even with styrofoam melted onto their food. It is possible that toxins from the styrofoam just went into whatever food they are eating.
Please don't ever heat food in plastic containers like Cool Whip/margarine tubs. Plastics like this, that are soft enough to melt after just a short time in a microwave, are releasing chemicals as they heat.
