I am not a fan of pet stores that sell pets, but we went in today. I saw a darling mini lop, but saw she was in what I observed to be pine shavings. I called the pet store after I returned home to let them know I was under the impression pine was a no no for bunnies just as cedar is.I need further information to back this up, so I can bring it in later in the week when Icheck on her. Does anyone have a great source for reference? I have a pamphlet from our rabbit breeder that says to avoid pine and cedar, but would like more info to back this claim up.

our veterinarian told us the "kiln" dried pine was alright as the drying removes the oils out of it. Just don't use fresh pine. Cedar by it's very nature has substances in the wood, like Redwood that are hazardous to the health of your pets.

Thanks, I too have heard kiln dried is okay, but I don't believe this was.

I did a bit of research into this, and found that yes, pine and cedar are bad for bunnies livers as well as respiratory systems. I bet the house rabbit society article will be good. I like to use kiln dried pine sawdust compressed into pellets--it doesn't have the oils, like Nancy McClelland said. Kudos on trying to improve the quality of life for these guys!

You could also point out to them that the pelletized pine is about $8 for 40 pounds...
Would be far more cost effective for a pet store!
(Get them with their wallets, if not their heart ;) )

Thanks to everyone for the input, I'll put it to good use.:highfive:

...yes, I am.:? Okay, now I've figured it out why you asked. I had afunky time registering for rabbits on-line andsent an e-mail to I don't know who when I signed up to be a friend explaining it all. My computer randomly stores info,so I must not have been paying attention when I logged on. I personally thought that account was defunct. and do not remember the password. Thanks for calling it to my attention. Iam not trying to give myself extra response/hits for my topics.

I've used kiln pine shavings 100% virgin pine for many years and I feel it's the best so far, I've tried it all.

LOL! No worries! I was just wonderingif you had lost the password or something. We are able to combine accounts into one (eg. integrate kshattes into your petitlapin account (which has a far cuter name ;) ) ) We can also reset your password if you are having problems with your current one.

Lol about the extra responses :D Funny! I didn't even think of it :biggrin2: It's all good.
